France to shut illegal Roma camps and deport migrants
BBC ^ | July 29th 2020 | Staff

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has ordered 300 illegal camps of travellers and Roma to be dismantled.

People in the camps found to be living illegally in France would be expelled, he said.

The order is a response to riots last week in which travellers attacked police in a Loire Valley town after a youth was shot dead.

The government said the camps are sources of crime but critics say an ethnic minority is being singled out.

"Within the next three months, half of the illegal camps will be dismantled - camps and squats - that is to say some 300," said Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux after a special government meeting.

A statement issued by the president's office after the meeting described the illegal camps as "sources of illegal trafficking, of profoundly shocking living standards, of exploitation of children for begging, of prostitution and crime".

'Severely punished'

The meeting was called to discuss the riot in the small Loire Valley town of Saint Aignan, where dozens of travellers armed with hatchets and iron bars attacked the police station, hacked down trees and burned cars.

The riot erupted after a gendarme shot and killed a traveller who had driven through a checkpoint, officials said.

Not a good time for French gypsies, or gypsies in France. France, for all its cosmopolitan air, is rather xenophobic. France would do better to accommodate gypsies than Mooselimbs, perhaps with designated camping grounds which would be rented to gypsies. I’d rather be with gypsies than Mooselimbs.

>>> French President Nicolas Sarkozy has ordered 300 illegal camps of travellers and Roma to be dismantled.

Terrific. Such official governmental hostility will make them eligible for asylum in the United States. They should have been less explicit.

“... As defined by these agreements, a refugee is a person who is outside his or her country of nationality (or place of habitual residence if stateless) who, owing to a fear of persecution on account of a protected ground, is unable or unwilling to avail himself of the protection of the state.

Protected grounds include race, nationality, religion, political opinion and membership of a particular social group.

The signatories to these agreements are further obliged not to return or “refoul” refugees to the place where they would face persecution.”

Interesting - but perhaps the US can avoid being on the hook for granting asylum because of criminal tendencies of the applicants.

Europe minister Pierre Lelouche accused "Roma crime" of climbing "140% each year in Paris since 2007."

At first I was thinking “Whoa! France is growing a pair”, but then I remember just recently reading how “youths” had burned another 50 cars and had fired on police with automatic weapons, but very little if anything happened because of it.

A Doberman snarls at a gendarme and he looks for a Chihuahua to kick.

and dont forget, the pr stunt that was them shutting down the Sangatte migrant camp on the doorstep of Calais used as a smuggling point to the UK and just moved it elsewhere. Sarkozy is in trouble politically, thats all this is about.

I don’t recall any gypsy trouble in France.

It’s muslims who are rioting and burning nightly, isn’t it?

I’m not sure France would be unhappy to dump their gypsies on the USA.

That was Muslim's rioting for political reasons this is in response to travelers, Roma's rioting against the police. But you are right it is hard to expel millions of Muslims living in your capital city but not so difficult to destroy shanty towns:

This is a Roma camp in Italy but you get the picture.

I’d rather be with gypsies than Mooselimbs.

And from my experience being somewhat of a transient, in Las Vegas, for a year, they are much more fun. Especially the young single women.

I wonder if these are French gypsies or if they are Romanians or from the Balkans. If they’re going to be expelled, clearly they are from some place else.

Spain was overrun with “Romanians” a few years ago. They were actually Eastern European gypsies of various kinds who made their living on drug sales, street crime and collecting welfare. Very unpleasant people, and they made the traditional gypsies look really bad, even though they weren’t the same group.

Some members of this wave of Eastern European gypsies are Muslim.

That was Muslim's rioting for political reasons...

The political reason being "they are not in charge of France and they don't like it"? Or maybe, the political reason being "the French refuse to convert to Islam and study Arabic"? Or possibly the political reason being "rioting is fun and part of their national character"?

Political reasons my a$$. They riot because they are uneducated savages and like it.

In the US, most gypsies are Christians. In Europe, however, there are some Muslim gypsies.

What an oddly fascinating observation. To what denomination do they belong?

Play, Gypsy, Play

"Who better than Zsa Zsa Gabor to guest star on F Troop as Marika, the leader of a tribe of glamorous Hungarian Gypsies? Sizing up the situation at Fort Courage, the enterprising Marika picks Corporal Agarn as a likely source of easy money. Before long, she has convinced the gullible Agarn that he is actually the long-lost Prince of the Gypsies ..."
