Facebook's Arab Problem? Network Blocks 'Palestinian' and 'Arab' From Profiles
Switched dot Com ^ | 07/27/10 | Matthew Zuras

Last week, Facebook accidentally deleted Sarah Palin's rant at/plea to Muslims (depending on your side of the fence) to oppose the construction of the so-called Ground Zero Mosque.

On Sunday, a group called The Palestinian Refugee ResearchNet tried to make a Facebook fan page for its supporters, but wasn't allowed because a glitch in the system blocked the world "Palestinian" from page titles. (The conspiracy theorists out there can rest their tin-foil-bedecked heads, because "Palestine" made it through without a problem, and Facebook has corrected the bizarre bug.)

We,the Prescient, must learn to handle our public discourse without censorship or fear.

That would include icky words and ideas people misunderestimate.

That is my story and I intend to stick with it.

Best regards to all,

So you do not support Operation Sarah Palin Smackdown on Facebook wherein users flag Sarah Palin posts and their supporters for violation of terms of service?

Best regards,

"Facebook must recognize that it is, due to its breadth, now a political micro-arena. ...And while we expect the company to retain a neutral public image, Facebook needs to do a thorough overhaul of its automated processes, so that it won't continue to offend people with inadvertent political gaffes..."

I don't know much about facebook but if it's private property I would think the only thing it "needs" to do is make the money the owners/investors believe it should.

It's always fun to watch those that have created nothing believe they can or should be able to, determine the operating rules for those that have.

Well said.

Now it’s a means of production, the Marxists want to control it.

True enough in Prelapsarian America, but this is the Age Of ObamaNation.

Private property is defined under Public Accommodation Theory of Law, Americans With Disabilities Theory Of Law, Eminent Domain Theory Of Law, Utility Easement Theory of Law.... to name just a few.

Check with your local shopping mall to see how the Private Property Theory of Law works out for them.

And, of course, you have StarCMC Theory of Law wherein some one who has no linguistic expertise and no technical expertise can successfully insist to the governing moderator of Youtube-who also is unlikely to have linguistic or technical expertise-that certain videos violate Youtube Terms Of Service.

This is either Monty Python or Kafka or both at their best.

Rational discourse: 0

Insanity galloping in all directions at once: 10,459 (and counting)

Apparently I completely misremembered StarCMC's smackdown tally.

Here is the tally in StarCMC's own words:

Hey chickie! FB is so stinking riddled with anti-Semitic anti-America pages it would make your head spin!! If FB is conservative, they are bending over backwards to prove otherwise. They have deleted three well known pages by vocal pro-America pro-Israel people — not to mention Geert Wilders page — but if you go over there and search for “Hate Israel” or “Kill Jews” you would be shocked at what you see. Same with “Hezbollah” or “Hamas”.
