Migrants sell up and flee Arizona ahead of crackdown

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Nicaraguan mother Lorena Aguilar hawks a television set and a few clothes on the baking sidewalk outside her west Phoenix apartment block.

A few paces up the street, her undocumented Mexican neighbour Wendi Villasenor touts a kitchen table, some chairs and a few dishes as her family scrambles to get out of Arizona ahead of a looming crackdown on illegal immigrants.

"Everyone is selling up the little they have and leaving," said Villasenor, 31, who is headed for Pennsylvania. "We have no alternative. They have us cornered."

The two women are among scores of illegal immigrant families across Phoenix hauling the contents of their homes into the yard this weekend as they rush to sell up and get out before the state law takes effect on Thursday.

The law, the toughest imposed by any U.S. state to curb illegal immigration, seeks to drive more than 400,000 undocumented day labourers, landscapers, house cleaners, chambermaids and other workers out of Arizona, which borders Mexico.

It makes being an illegal immigrant a state crime and requires state and local police, during lawful contact, to investigate the status of anyone they reasonably suspect of being an illegal immigrant.

The U.S. government estimates 100,000 unauthorized migrants left Arizona after the state passed an employer sanctions law three years ago requiring companies to verify workers' status using a federal computer system. There are no figures for the number who have left since the new law passed in April.

Some are heading back to Mexico or to neighbouring states. Others are staying put and taking their chances.

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about.

Illegals hit the road plus cheap kitchen tables.

Git er done Gov Brewer... git er done!

Don’t kid yourselves, everyone in Phoenix has a carport sale quarterly.

That means that there will be less to deport and make it much easier. The other states need to do the same thing, then they would all leave, or at least most of them. The border states need to jump on the band waggon. When most of the illegals either leave or end up in prison, the excuse that there are to many of them to round up goes out the window.

Would that Minnesota enact the same law. I don’t see it, though. I see Minnesota becoming a sanctuary state when a Democrat is elected governor in the next cycle.

This is good news.

As I always like to tell the open borders nutcases... what are the other laws you can ignore? Mayhem? Drug use? Rape?

I do, in a way, feel sorry for this person, having been convinced by some that she could squat on American soil and call it her own simply by showing up. Now she has to pay the piper... or maybe I’ll say the illegal chickens have come home to roost. LOL

This is such propaganda s**t. I thought reuters might improve after Thompson of Canada bought them but same crap.

If AZ keeps passing laws like this it will become an oasis like Switzerland.

Meanwhile in FL we have open border RINO scum like Rubio, Crist, Jeb Bush, Connie Mack 3 et al. Rick Scott is the only Repub with any guts.

I told some guy campaigning for a GOP state repub that I am considering moving to AZ. If they pass a few more laws then I am there.

The law, the toughest imposed by any U.S. state to curb illegal immigration

Except Rhode Island!

Their law rarely gets mentioned and they were never sued for it or even threatened with a suit.

"Everyone is selling up the little they have and leaving... They have us cornered."

A family scrambles ahead of a looming crackdown, selling what little they have. They are cornered!

Bias much? This report could have been written many different ways but of course what we're given is designed to evoke as much sympathy as possible to the poor illegal victims of racist Governor Brewer.

Pennsylvania? My suggestion is that they go back to Mexico. Perhaps if they didn’t have any luck sneaking across our borders they might decide to have another revolution down there.

Personally, I would send George Bush, John McCain and the rest of those turncoat Republicans who tried to force amnesty for these invaders on the American people to Mexico too.
