U.S. Sen. John McCain has spent an unprecedented $16 million to date fending off a challenge from former U.S. Congressman J.D. Hayworth.
Hayworth, so far, has spent $1.5 million, according to campaign finance reports filed July 15.
Hayworths spokesman, Mark Sanders, said the expenditure proves Hayworth is such a strong candidate that McCain pulled out all the stops with phone banking, mailers, radio and TV. I think that the senator was really fearful of losing this race and he decided to just dump as much as he could into it to buy it, he said.
While candidates are allowed to transfer money from accounts used for other federal races, Sanders criticized McCains use of funds left over from McCains 2008 presidential bid. McCain transferred $4.6 million this quarter, and altogether about $9 million.
McCain reports having about $1.7 million on hand after the quarter that ended in June. Hayworth, who launched a statewide ad Friday attacking McCain for his work on comprehensive immigration reform, has nearly $1 million.

I’ll never forget seeing his daughter draped in that hijab or whatever it was-—the black and white checked Palestinian scarf pictured in the pages of People or some such rag mag.
She saw it as a fashion statement.
The nut doesn’t fall far from the diseased tree, does it?
Hey!!!! I saw it on Free Republic!!!!! I don’t buy the “rag” People!!!!!
(but, I bought The Globe recently....mighty interesting....gonna SAVE it for posterity....)
JD needs money to fight him this last month..... you want McCain gone then people are going to have to put their money where they want is.
Why is it McCain can only find his fangs when it comes to fighting other Republicans?
(Rhetorical question, ya’ll. I learned the answer long ago, as I imagine every other FReeper has)
yeah... it wasn’t the sheer amount of public talk that mccain needed to improve, it was the content of it. obama was just begging to be flogged and flayed as a flim flam, but the kentucky fried gentleman would not oblige him.
money can only do so much. once you’ve achieved near universal message saturation, then you need a better message, and not to stick your foot in your mouth.
"If I lose to JD, I can always get a job as a paint stirrer at Home Depot."
He would screw up the colors.
The election in Arizona is not just about John McCain. It is also about his daughter, who the egomaniac wants to replace him when she is eligible six years from now.
McCains non adversarial presidential campign against Obama means he is a an enabler of nationalist socialism, an enabler of fascism as manifested by Obama and his Alinsky based movement dedicated to achieving totalitarian power n America. Make nomisake about i.Mccain is the enemy, a fascism supporter and he needs to go down in historical infamy, as a man wh failed to protec and defend his own state and nation. Nothingcould be more clear, nomatter how much money he sends.
"Why not try your skills as a ketchup pumper at McD's?"
FLUSH THE JOHN! McCain HAS to go!
(To the tune of Frankie & Johnny!)
Johnny and Teddy were Senators
On opposite sides of the aisle
They got together and drafted a bill
Guaranteed to make illegals smile
Amnesty was their game and they had no shame
Johnny and Senator Feingold
Gave campaign finance a try
But then the highest court in the land
Said the 1st amendment must apply
Gotta play by the rules now Johnny looks like a fool
Johnny and Mr. Obama
They both agree Gitmo should close
But bringing terrorists into the USA
Is a plan that we oppose
No, they dont belong and Johnnys got it all wrong
Now Johnny and Senator Lieberman
Got together on cap and trade
Anemic hands across the aisle
Gonna send the country to its grave
Its time to let him know old Johnnys gotta go
Johnny believes Global Warming
Limousine Liberals and all
Congressional junkets to Copenhagen
Everybodys havin a ball
Just ask Al Gore - Johnny knows the score
S & L Man Charlie Keating
He came to Johnny one day
Said the government boys are sniffing around
How much to make em go away?
Did Johnny take a bribe to join the Keating 5?
Now fast-forward 20 years later
Banks are in trouble again
Johnny says, Lets bail em out
Its just a trillion or maybe ten.
Lets put some wind in their sails cause theyre too big to fail.
We know theres oil in Alaska
Drilling wont cause any harm
But Johnny agrees with the tree-hugging geeks
Gas is gonna cost a leg and an arm
Johnny why cant you see whats good for you and me?
Now everyone knows about ACORN
They get lots of taxpayers dough
Prostitution rings and voter fraud
And home loans to any old schmoe
No matter ACORNs crimes Johnny thinks theyre just fine
Were tired of hearin your flip-flops
Were tired of hearin your lies
You may think were all dummies but you cant
Pull the wool over our eyes
Youre careers hit a snag - so start packin your bags
Cause Johnny, youve worn out your welcome
Its time to bid DC goodbye
Go write a book or learn to cook
And eat a little humble pie
Just ask Sheriff Joe he says you gotta go
Yeah, go Johnny, go its time to hit the road.
Good-bye

Too bad Hayworth can’t afford to run it as an infomercial.
Nobody would get any ketchup....McCain would call it “ earmarks “
“Too bad Hayworth cant afford to run it as an infomercial.”
Perhaps you could get some of your local Arizona radio stations to run it.

Hayworth Hits Statewide Broadcast
Ex-Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R) is launching the first serious assault on Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), attacking McCain for working too closely with Dems on comprehensive immigration reform legislation.
The ad features shots of McCain with the late Sen. Ted Kennedy and Pres. Obama, as well as clips in which McCain touts his work with both the liberal lion and the president.
Hayworth has been vastly outspent by McCain, who began attacking the former congressman even before Hayworth joined the race. But now Hayworth is fighting back, using his campaign treasury to purchase 1,200 points of statewide broadcast TV in the Phoenix, Tucson and Yuma markets.
Hayworth will remain on broadcast TV throughout the rest of the campaign, said Dan Bayens, Hayworth’s media strategist. The primary is Aug. 24. And immigration, Hayworth’s pet issue, is likely to play a big role in his attacks on the incumbent.
“J.D. Hayworth led the fight against McCain’s amnesty bill, wrote the book on securing our border, and is endorsed by Sheriff Joe Arpaio,” a gravelly-voiced narrator says.
McCain has sought to inoculate himself from attacks on his record on immigration, recognizing his vulnerability among conservatives in the AZ GOP electorate. He ran his own ad earlier this year in which he expressed support for building a border fence — a position that had some anti-illegal immigration activists furious after McCain previously said he opposed an enforcement-only approach.
Hayworth’s first broadcast ad, produced by The Strategy Group for Media, “McCain’s Amnesty”:

” Hayworth has been vastly outspent by McCain, who began attacking the former congressman even before Hayworth joined the race. “
And Palin hit the ground running one day after Hayworth announced.
Good ad. It has Obama speaking highly of McCain. LOL!
