Oh my: Palin 28, Romney 18, Gingrich 17, Huckabee 13

Via Conservatives 4 Palin, not only is this the best poll I’ve seen for her this year, it comes from the august precincts of The Economist.

Dude, is this happening?

Sarah Palin 28% Mitt Romney 18% Newt Gingrich 17% Mike Huckabee 13% Mitch Daniels 4% Tim Pawlenty 1% Mike Pence 1% Haley Barbour 1% John Thune 1% No preference 17%

That’s a sample of Republicans, natch. Among tea-partiers, specifically, it’s Palin 26, Romney 19, Gingrich 16, and Huckabee 14. (Mitt does better among tea-partiers than among the GOP generally?) She also leads among a sample of all voters, albeit by only two points over Romney. Can’t tell if this represents a surge for her or if he’s simply fallen back a bit over time due to disgruntlement over RomneyCare, but great news for Palin supporters either way.

Do we dare discuss … the bad news? From the crosstabs:

12. Do you think Sarah Palin would have the ability to be an effective president? Yes 28% No 51% Not sure 20%

* 18. What do you think is Sarah Palin’s main priority? What’s best for the country 23% What’s best for her family 18% What’s best for her career 49% Something else 9%

That’s among all voters, who split 41/31 for Obama in a head-to-head match-up and 30/54 on the question of whether they think it’s likely that Palin would beat him if she wins the GOP nomination. The one bright spot in the crosstabs? When asked if the media has been harder on her, treated her the same, or gone easier on her than other politicians, the split is 47/18/22. For Obama it’s only 32/21/37 and for Hillary it’s 27/34/28. In other words, even among a sample of the general public that’s cool to the idea of her as president, there’s plenty of sympathy for how she’s been treated by the press. That’ll be a useful weapon for her if/when she runs and the frenzy of attacks begins, which explains why she was so sharp in rattling off her criticisms of the media to the Daily Caller yesterday. And it’s also a reminder of the point I made last week about her opponents needing to be careful not to condescend to her. No doubt some of this sympathy from the public is a backlash to media lefties unfairly accusing her of being some kind of dullard. That backlash can be transferred to candidates too, I’m sure.

From Alaska morning radio, here’s the latest on whether she’s running next year or not. Skip ahead to 3:50.

Yup, and yet they’re the only four included in polls. You’d almost think someone wants us to nominate someone who can’t beat Obama.

Multiple polls have shown Palin and the other Pubbies about even with Obama. This one give Barry a 10-point lead, so you can pretty much assume the other questions are about 10 points off in the same direction.

Yes, it would seem the MSM wants to pick our choices of potential candidates-again.

I wish they’d poll these people who don’t think Palin would make a good President to ask why not. I’ll bet half would recite some gag line from SNL.

Half the FReepers who oppose her can't come up with a coherent reason why.

Romney has shown his “toughness” by directing attacks on
Gov. Palin’s children on the eve of Election 2008
for the DNC and Obama.

Romney is a skunk, which mirrors his other
bad qualities and ineligibility.

So strange that you write something like this. I am stunned by the ones who hero worship God Sarah Palin (and you do believe me)....you honor her on Sundays too???? But anyway you expect everyone to toe the line with Sarah and if someone doesn't want to vote for her, they are vilified. It seems to me that you have more in common with Venezuela and North Korea than the United States. If you reread your post you sound like a COMMUNIST!!!! Nobody can have a different personal opinion on here. Everyone has to lock step with YOUR candidate. Do you realize how you sound????? I feel like some of you brain washed scary cult personalities are the ones with the problem. It is scary in fact.

Are you really going to continue spewing that crap? When she's down, "she can't win". When she's up, "she's a tool". Obviously you don't want her for whatever reason.

What is it with you Sarahbots? I'm obviously referring to the general concept of the media repeatedly mentioning certain names in poll after poll for a long period of time as if they are the only people who will be running for President. I didn't single out any one person yet you Sarahbots assume I am targeting only her by making a generic statement! Get over yourselves!

She's a political personality. Get a grip.

See, there's just something wrong with you. You assign too much importance to folks liking one candidate over another.

I'm actually astounded that your anger over Palin is out of control. Case in point:

It seems to me that you have more in common with Venezuela and North Korea than the United States. If you reread your post you sound like a COMMUNIST!!!!

Soooo, because I dare to think Palin is a good candidate I'm a communist? Maybe you just need more caffine?

IFILL: We do need to keep within our two minutes. But I just wanted to ask you, do you support capping carbon emissions?
PALIN: I do. I do.

People who don’t study the background of potential candidates do all of us a disservice.

Palin is no conservative.

If you guys spent as much energy fighting Democrats as you invest in bad-mouthing Palin (kinda like the folks on Journolist, huh?), 2010 and 2012 would be in the bag.

But, for the record, let me list a few of the objections I've received to Palin from other FReepers:

...I can't bear her accent.

...She not only sings country songs, she knows the words to them.

...She didn't go to a "good" school.

...Nobody lives in Alaska.

...I just don't like her.

I would certainly hope that the addressees have more substantive objections.

But, when half your opponents come up with objections like the ones above, it suggests a lot of your opposition has nothing to do with qualifications or policy or character. Only some kind of spiteful animus (again, just like the folks on Journolist).

Don't mistake me for a Palin supporter. I'm not. Yet. But I could be. The field hasn't fully formed yet. And there will be people who disqualify themselves and others who emerge.

It's way too early to pick the winner of the Republican primaries -- though I think we can be reasonably certain it won't be Ron Paul or Duncan Hunter...

Please link us to these, at once!!
