The final meltdown of Mel Gibson has come at a convenient time for Catholic-baiters in the media. The guy threatens violence against women, he’s a racist and he’s a CATHOLIC! Here’s Lucy Mangan in The Guardian, stooping almost as low as Gibson:
Received wisdom is that Gibson cannot recover from this. But one course is still open to him. If ever priesthood beckoned a man, it is surely now. At least he apparently saves his violence for adult females.
And if you don’t understand that last dig, let me point you to Times columnist Caitlin Moran, who explained on Thursday that the Catholic Church “f**** kids”.
The slurs against Catholics being put about liberal journalists aren’t far removed from Protocols territory, if you ask me. But dragging Gibson into this rancid rhetoric doesn’t work, for a simple reason.
He’s not a Catholic.
In fact, Mel Gibson is in some respects the opposite of a Catholic, since one of the themes of his fake Catholicism is that the Pope isn’t the Pope. Admittedly, Mel’s own theology tends to morph like a shape-shifting lizard, depending on how hung over he is, but in so far as he’s anything he’s a sedevacantist like his father, Hutton Gibson.
Sedevacantists regard the Second Vatican Council as so obviously evil that it must have been the work of Satan, and therefore the Pope who called it and his successors aren’t really Popes. Gibson Senior once reportedly described John Paul II as “Garrulous Karolus the Koran kisser” and has put about the notion that the last real Pope was secretly elected at the 1958 conclave but forced to resign in favour of anti-pope John XIII. But then old man Gibson never met a conspiracy theory he didn’t like; hence his well-documented Holocaust and 9/11 revisionism.

As an Orthodox Christian, I find the sedvacantist Latins a very curious (and unpleasant) group. If you inquire of their opinion of us Orthodox, why, they’ll tell you we’re schismatics and rail against us like the most extreme ultramontanists, but at the same time they argue for an ecclesiological position vis-a-vis the Popes of Rome rather like ours, though we think there hasn’t been a proper (Orthodox) Pope of Rome since 1009.
Amen.
I feel sorry for the man -- I truly believe that he has inherited the same physiologic/psychological condition his father has. His critics have no interest in that, only what they can gain from using his behaviors to fuel their own prejudices and agitprop.
>>Mel Gibson is a Catholic.<<
A Roman Catholic?
Nope, sorry. He isn’t.
He is part of an independent Catholic Church. They are not the same kind of “Catholic” as I am. They don’t believe in B16. I do and I suspect you do too.
>>I believe he has been attacked by Satan, particularly since the Passion of the Christ, <<
I believe it as well.
>>Theyre in my family, and I love them very much!!!<<
That explains googobs about your disdain for Catholics.
And verbal child abuser Alex Baldwin.
And those who will post comments here, saying the tapes were fakes, or that she deserved the trashing he gave her. Spare us. A man who slugs a woman is no man at all, and I don't care if she is despicable. And if the tapes are fake, Prove it. The preponderance of the evidence seems to be on her side.
Mel is beginning to look alot like Soupy Sales

“Notice anything funny about their attitude towards the pope?
jewish people?”
1. Most of the Protestants that are here using this personal tragedy as another opportunity to attack Catholicism have like feelings for the Pope...(anti Christ, anti Pope, Leader of the Whore of Babylon.
2. Most still believe in myths abut The Church so are ignorant as to why he is not a Catholic. Since they don’t see anything wrong with breaking away from Christ’s Church...they can’t relate to why he is not a Catholic. You’d think that somebody who believes the Pope is an anti-Pope would be understood as not being Catholic...yet ignorance is bliss.
Amen.
Become a Baptist, you want have to claim to be Protestant or Catholic.
Yes, I do converse with some of these people.....
Theyre in my family, and I love them very much!!!
Same here.My daughter and her husband.(SSPX)
Why drag religion into Mels failed love life?
They didn't like John PaulII(I think he a Saint),but she likes the new Pope.
About the Jews she has never said anything about them.Next time I talk to my son inlaw I'll ask him.
Baptists are Protestants.
Even if they don’t understand or know it.
I knew his father was over the edge, but I didn't think Mel had joined him yet.
For the Guardian, though, Catholic is Catholic, and there is no distinction, they hate them all.
Mel Gibson is the Advanced Industrial Nation’s version of a religous fundamentalist, with Roman Catholicism just happening to be the place he hangs his hat. There was more blood, from what I hear, in Passion of the Christ, than in most bloody Islamic rituals involving self-flagellation.
Of course, go take a look at any Catholic Church in Mexico and you’re likely to see the acolytes (sometimes old ladies)
crawling on their knees up the broad and deep and numerous steps to the Church’s front door, which is inevitably going to be another bloody ritual. How many religions don’t involve blood and pain?
Mel Gibson is not a threat to my country, my finances, nor to my life...
Ergo, what he does, thinks, says is irrelevant, and a convenient distraction for those that ARE all of the above.
And if the Left hates him, well, the “enemy of my enemy is my friend...”
Pretty much sums it up.
