No, this is not coming from Rasmussen or an internal GOP poll, but from the normally Democrat-sympathetic Public Policy Polling... And it's still Democrat-sympathetic, promoting the candidates the hard left wishes would be on the republican ticket.

If they were really trying to tell Republicans who their choices should be, they would have shown Nanny Huckabee leading the Big O along with Newt and Flip-Flop.

I'm assuming this is a national poll - PPP usually focuses on state-by-state polls, particularly in North Carolina. Also, "Democrat sympathetic" is an understatement - PPP works almost exclusively for the North Carolina Democratic Party and its affiliated candidates and special interest groups.
Some interesting bits of information:
He trails Mitt Romney 46-43, Mike Huckabee 47-45, Newt Gingrich 46-45, and is even tied with Sarah Palin at 46.
Imagine what the numbers would be against a candidate without established negatives among independents like those four?
In case one wonders whether PPPs sample is to blame, the partisan split favors Democrats by five points, 39/34. Thats probably overstating the actual size of the gap and the percentage of Democrats in the general population, which means that the independents got short shrift as well. Also note that this poll surveyed registered voters, not likely voters a sampling technique that would tend to favor Democrats and Obama a little more.
That's a surprising admission from them. I'm not sure I agree that sampling "likely voters" would favor Democrats and Obama, though. Just ask President John Kerry.

Newt Gingrich is the candidate to beat 0bama. No, no, no... it's time again for the GOP to pick some gray, dried-up old fart to nominate because "it's his time." "Richard Lugar, please pick up the courtesy phone"

Show me a poll with Chris Christie - I bet he beats ‘em all.
Whether he would run (or is even the guy we want) is another story...

Romney and Gingrich are non-starters who will not receive my support for any reason. Period.
Romney is a liberal.
Gingrich is unelectable.

I would pay hundreds of dollars for front row at those debates.
Gingrich would annihilate him. In fact, I believe he would do so by so great of a margin that minds would be changed.

This is what the left pushed last time about Newt, and we all know that a presidential race will NOT let this go. Presidential races are brutal and vicious. Newt is a non-starter.
We agree with Scoobie that Newt Gingrich's serial wife-dumping was worse than Bill Clinton's sexual escapades. In 1981, Newt dumped his first wife, Jackie Battley, for Marianne, wife number 2, while Jackie was in the hospital undergoing cancer treatment. Marianne and Newt divorced in December, 1999 after Marianne found out about Newt's long-running affair with Callista Bisek, his one-time congressional aide. Gingrich asked Marianne for the divorce by phoning her on Mother's Day, 1999.
