The White House said on Wednesday it was "surprised and disappointed" by attacks on its policies from some corners of the business world, as it pushed back hard against criticism from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
"The stakes are far too high for us to be working against one another," White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and Valerie Jarrett, President Barack Obama's top adviser, said in a letter to the chamber, a top lobby group for U.S. businesses.
"That is why we were surprised and disappointed at the rhetoric we have heard from some in the business community -- rhetoric that fails to acknowledge the important steps this administration has taken," they said in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.
The chamber, which is hosting a jobs summit on Wednesday, has accused Obama and his Democrats in Congress of neglecting job creation and hampering growth with burdensome regulatory and tax policies.
Recalling the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the White House said it would not "stand by" while the energy industry fought tighter regulations to improve environmental safety, and stressed its duties went far wider than the business lobby.

Don't go weak knee-ed on me. They still need 60 votes in the Senate even after the election to pass a bill. But they can increase/add spending and raise taxes with only 51 using budget reconciliation like with health reform, assuming they have the votes in the house for the same measures.
Isn’t that a complete joke?! While they work to destroy the private sector, business is supposed to just sit there and take it? Whatever.
That’s what excessive bureaucracy is all about. Everyone takes credit for the good, everyone passes the buck when there is blame that needs to be placed.
“Uh, youz has got a nice little business dere. Be a SHAME if sumthin, uh, HAPPENED to it.”
Not weak in the knees, only cautious.
Our nightmare is where the masks come off the GOP Statists after the elections, so there would be just the 60 votes.
Our side needs to be prepared to make lots of noise just in case. Not sure what would work, but it deserves outside the box thought.
It used to be small business that drove the economy and it was their domain.... now its all changed and the Govt now tells business what and how to do it?
Obamah is Kicking America’s Ass !!
Hahahahahaha...the business community has been protecting themselves since June of 2008 when they knew the “job killer express” was coming their way...earth to Barry, you suck! Your ideas are so 1918...didn’t you hear? Lenin started a doomed experiment - you putz wake the hell up!
He needs to get his own rear end kicked.
Obama is "surprised" because he is so stupid and Obama is "disappointed" because we aren't so stupid.
