“chicken twists and alcoholic chicken.”

I've lived in the country all my life, but I've never seen an alcoholic chicken, much less twisted one.

I don’t think they are all in the same place.

Derek Jeter must be devastated right now. . . first Bob Sheppard, now Steinbrenner. Steinbrenner looked upon him as sort of an “adopted grandson” in Jeter’s early years, and Jeter has long maintained a high profile for maintaining proud Yankee traditions as much as possible (when coming to bat he has been introduced by a recording of Sheppard’s voice — rather than the team’s current P.A. announcer — for years).

Billy Martin is probably kicking cloud dust on his shoes and George is laughing at him telling him he’s fired.

A bombastic figure for sure, but I think you could make a good case for posthumous HOF induction someday. Seven world titles, restoring the Yankee brand from the downward slide the team took in the late 60's and early 70's, etc.

If only George had succeeded in buying the Cleveland Indians in 1971 before buying the Yankees (Indians owner Vernon Stouffer rejected his offer), how different might baseball history have turned out for my Tribe.

The whole Yankee organization must be stunned.

Sheppard and Steinbrenner gone.

Back in the 80s, when Letterman was with NBC and still funny, he had a segment from time to time called "Real Books."

One of them was I Suck by George Steinbrenner. Another was Wimmins Be People, Too by Ike Turner.

You couldn't get away with that today.

Wonder if he’s now trying to manage the Yankees up there in heaven. Trying to imagine DiMaggio, Ruth, Rizzuto, Billy Martin, Gehrig, and the rest of the gang’s reaction to his showing up.

I'm reminded of the "Ty Cobb wanted to play... we told him to stick it!!" scene in Field of Dreams.

:-)

‘Your a sore loser and classless act.’

I saw nicer comments when Teddy Kennedy died!

It is just a game, people.

Oh for Pete’s sake- lighten up! I said I hoped he would either go fast (avoid endless suffering) or recover completely. As far as disliking him- if that makes me classless in your opinion- I’ll live with it.

I am, however not a sore loser. Except when it comes to the Yankees!!! I expect you’d find many Yankee fans who feel the same way about the Red Sox. There’s a respect for each other, deep down- but man oh man- there’s no one more fun to hate!

I’ve been doing this Red Sox thing for over 40 years, I’ve earned my disgruntled mutterings.

Now go lecture someone else.

JOHN TYLER: How about this. You give me Castanza, I convert your concessions to all chicken no charge. Instead of hot dogs, chicken dogs. Instead of pretzels, chicken twists. Instead of beer, alcoholic chicken.

MR. STEINBRENNER: How do you make that alcoholic chicken?

JOHN TYLER: Let if ferment, just like everything else.

MR. STEINBRENNER: That stuff sounds great. All right. I’ll have Costanza on the next bus.

Steinbrenner died on the same day as the All-Star game. George always did have a flair for the dramatic.

RIP, George.

If the Boston owner died Id pay respect, not say he ruined the game and that he’s fun to hate.

See # 74 :)

Reading upthread it seems he had some mental difficulties in the last few years. It’s dispiriting to see once robust and vital people changed into shells of themselves.

A reporter once asked DiMaggio what he’d say if he had to negotiate salary with George. Joe D said the first thing he’d say would be “Hello partner!”
