Kid called me a cracker which I never "got."
So I responded thusly: "Okay, are we talkin' SALTINES or RITZ here? 'Cuz I just love Saltines but I'm not too fond of Ritz...." The kids thought I was joking with the punk and he pretty much exploded in class which in turn brought security (unbidden) into class.
They hustled him out and the kids then responded to me that "CRACKER" refers to "WHIP CRACKER as in the Plantation MASSA." So I said:
"Okay, but how is that a pejorative? He's still the BOSS. right? Calling a white person "cracker" to his face makes him feel bad only to the extent that he personally feels responsible for cultural institution of slavery. It definitely doesn't have the negative effect on an individual that the "N WORD" has on black folks. Man, they thought long and hard on that one.
That was at the start of the year, too. I think they paid more attention in my American Government classes than usual and it seems to have been passed to more than one class. At least that was my sense of the school year last year. I go back to work in the middle of August. This school year holds an important election. Have to see what effect it has on my classes.
