Liberals analyze their Obama 'despair' By: Abby Phillip July 10, 2010 05:38 PM EDT

For many liberals, it is the summer of their discontent.

Already disappointed with President Barack Obama’s ability to deliver on campaign promises, they now contemplate a slowing economic recovery and a good chance of Republican gains in November. Such developments would make enacting Obama’s agenda even more difficult.

Two recent essays framed the debate raging within the progressive community over why the promise of Obama’s candidacy has not lived up to their expectations — and how liberals should proceed in what they fear will be difficult months ahead.

In a 17,000-plus word piece published in The Nation on Thursday, journalist Eric Alterman calls the Obama presidency “a big disappointment” for progressives and blamed a broken system in Washington that he says allows the minority party to rule with impunity, and special interests and big money to dictate legislative policy.

“Face it,” he concludes, “the system is rigged, and it’s rigged against us.” His essay is subtitled: “Why a progressive presidency is impossible for now.”

But writing in Democracy: A Journal of Ideas, Michael Tomasky, the editor, counsels patience, arguing that American history has shown that change always takes time and continued effort against entrenched conservative opposition.

“The changes we want to see won’t happen in 18 months, or in two years, or four, or probably even eight,” he concludes in his article, “Against Despair.”

Has Hussein ever been a legislator, a Senator, even a lawyer? Nothing more than a “community organizer”, whatever that is, for an organization which has broken more laws than the New Black Panthers. Obama breaks laws, he does not make laws.

It's good to see that they haven't bought a clue yet.

Man! If Alterman thinks 0's presidency is a drag for progressives liberals, he ought to get a load of the circus from our side of the street.

There’s that word again—disappointed. I remember when the liberals were “disappointed” with Clinton. But, like battered wives, they went back for more abuse in 1996. The only thing that would make a liberal not vote for Obama again would be for him to switch parties.

They know words but I am not sure they know what they mean. I get my daily humor over at Demon Underpants where there are a total of four responses to the printed article. One of the responses is as follows:

“I voted for Obama because I thought he was the far left socialist the right wing media said he was. That will teach me to trust them. OK. I knew he was a far left socialist. but I hoped he was at least a center-left democract, and not another mid right Democrat. Dammit.”

Could someone interpret this for me? I haven’t had any alcohol yet today so it is difficult to understand.

No Kidding... they act like such victims because they are not allowed to to confiscate private property, resources, and capital. They blame it on corporations and special interests and they do not understand that americans are those “special interests and corporations”.

When Democrats were the minority party, all they could do was whine all day about how the "rights of the minority" were being ignored. Now, when they have power, they whine that the Republican minority gets to "rule with impunity".

That sorry sack of &%@$ is so full of it. The GOP has lacked the power to stop anything without Democrat help and, in the House, they are as out of the loop as any party in the last 100 years.

But since he can't blame his communist messiah, Alterman has to blame those evil Republicans the same way the Nazis scapegoated Jews.

The Nation is a Communist Party rag anyway. Everybody knows it.

Maybe these numbskulls should have looked at Barry’s resume before voting. No reason for them to be disappointed - they got the Hugo Chavez style President that they wanted as well as the Senate and House. This will only happen once in a lifetime so they should enjoy it until November at which time they will still have their photobook of memories.
