Unless they have a life-altering experience that impacts them as a whole. Like having to survive a Depression ..... .....like seeing a mushroom cloud rising from only 20 miles away. If it's a big enough one, it could ruin their day. If they survive it, they'll be "B-1 Bob" Republicans for life.

It won't so much be the mushroom cloud (which will probably reinforce the whole "No Nukes!" mentality), as the aftermath. When they're faced with breakdown in civil authority and realize that the government won't be there to help them in what will quickly turn into a "Lord of the Flies" social environment.
