FAIRFIELD, Ill. — A tip from the public led to the arrest of a Fairfield (Ill.) Community High School gym teacher on charges she had unlawful sexual contact with a student.
Haven A. Kirkpatrick, 29, of Fairfield faces eight counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse — all felonies. If convicted, she faces between three and seven years in prison on each count.
Kirkpatrick was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon at the home of her parents in Carmi and lodged in the White County Jail pending transfer to Wayne County. Circuit Judge Tim Neubauer set her bond at $100,000.
The arrest follows a fairly brief but intense investigation carried out by Illinois State Police Special Agent Rick White, Fairfield City Police, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department. Kirkpatrick is accused of having illicit sexual contact with a local high school student between the age of 13 and 17.

The arrest follows a fairly brief but intense investigation carried out by Illinois State Police Special Agent Rick White, Fairfield City Police, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department. Kirkpatrick is accused of having illicit sexual contact with a local high school student between the age of 13 and 17.
In each of the charges, Kirkpatrick is accused of holding a position of authority as a high school teacher over the alleged victim who was at least 13 years of age but under 18.
In each of the eight counts, Kirkpatrick is accused of having unlawful sexual contact with the victim “for the purpose of the sexual gratification of the defendant.” The alleged contacts took place, investigators said, as recently as July 2, and as early as May 18 of this year.
The charges were filed Wednesday morning by Edwards County State’s Attorney Michael Valentine, who was appointed special prosecutor in the case because of a conflict with Wayne County State’s Attorney David M. Williams.
“I intend to move forward vigorously with the prosecution of this case,” Valentine said. “The cooperation between investigating agencies in developing this case was phenomenal.”
A native of Carmi, Kirkpatrick is a tenured teacher at Fairfield. She was hired in 2006 to teach gym, health and driver’s education. In January 2009, she was named assistant girls track coach. She also served as the girls’ junior varsity basketball coach, a position she resigned from at the end of last school year.
Fairfield Community High School Superintendant David Savage was out of town on Wednesday and unavailable for comment.

Gym teacher=we know the student is a girl. No question. My mother told me she found out years later that her grade school gym teacher got arrested for diddling girls.

Normally for students of that age, they are gender segregated for physical education and the gym teachers are of the same gender as the students. The exception would be for purposely mixed gender activities such as square dancing, and then teachers of both genders would be present at those. I just can’t imagine this gal seducing a boy at a square dance exercise, however.
