Projections Show 20% Chance Oil Will Reach From Corpus Christi To Charleston

NOAA just released threat simulations for the oil spill, assuming a 33,000 barrels ber day spill that lasts for 90 days (via SkyTruth). Simulations show an 80% chance damage will round the tip of Florida. There is a 20% chance oil will make it all the way up to Charleston, SC, and west to Corpus Christi Texas. In the worst scenario -- less than 1% chance -- oil could spread down to southern Mexico and engulf the Caribbean islands.

The simulation confirms frightening projections from South Florida College, which had been dismissed by officials we talked to in South Carolina.

If Dear Leader had waived the Jones Act and immediately brought in every ship and everything and everyone that could suck up oil, the present situation would be at least 90% better than it is now.

Reasonable estimates state that only 2% of the oil spill is on the surface, mixed with Corexit, the rest is co-mixed with Corexit subsea. This could turn out to be much more significant a risk than the surface oil. Corexit is banned in the UK due to its toxicity.

Hmmm...I’m going to Key West next week. I’ll probably beat the oil, but this doesn’t look good for them.

Tar balls were found in the surf of Galveston this weekend and tested - they’re from the Deepwater oil spill.

I assume it’s okay to post the link to the story....

there’s an 80% chance the 20% estimate is not based on any science and is merely an emotional outburst.

We would even welcomed ‘Dear Leader’ and his straw down here.

If we have a hurrican (more like when) even ‘Hard Times, MS’ will have oil on the steeple of the church there.

That prediction is a little old now. The next tropical depression may form from the current system just to the east of the Yucatan Peninsula. The current track prediction is that it will travel more north then Alex. Straight towards the Texas and Louisiana state line. That means we could end up with a cat 1 cane moving oil slicks straight east from the backside of the cane. So for the first time since the spill began, current will travel strongly west to east toward the west coast of the Florida Peninsula. At any rate, Miss/Al/Panhandle will be hit hard again on the front side of the cane. Could slam Louisiana by moving oil further into the marshes on its front side.
