Bear Hunt Weighed (Record Sightings in New Jersey Spur Animal-Control Plan)
WS Journal ^ | 7-3-10 | CHRIS HERRING

A record number of black bears have been sighted in New Jersey this year, prompting state officials to consider allowing bear hunting to control the population boom.

Bears have been seen everywhere from hospitals and senior centers to roadways and schools, sometimes alarming areas that haven't ever seen them before. And a bear attack last week on a hiker and his dog prompted a town to put off its holiday fireworks display until after July 4th. (State officials caught the bear and euthanized it Friday.)

More than 1,250 sightings have been reported in the state so far this year, slightly up from the pace in 2009, which set the record for sightings. The number of calls the state received last year was 3,006, up 41.5% from 2005.

"We've got bears in areas that haven't had a bear in 100 years," said Patrick Carr, a wildlife biologist for the state Department of Environmental Protection.

"Bears have been seen everywhere from hospitals and senior centers to roadways and schools..."

....not to mention Tony Soprano's back yard.

Here in Alaska, bear are shot the second time they show up around people or a house; nothing more than dangerous pests. When you get 20-30 miles away from any people, animals have no fear; they actually walk up to you usually being the first time they have seen humans. Bear just figure you are something to eat, wonder how you taste. Bear need to fear people.

I do not know how the drought is in NJ but it is bad in VA. It is forcing wildlife out in record numbers. I went to visit my parents and hit a deer (big guy) with a little rental car. I saw 5 more deer hit while on my 3 day trip there. The tow guys who helped me after hitting the deer said that a bunch of people had hit bear this year including one of them.

Extend the hunting season. People need to eat meat. People do not need a tin car hitting deer or bear while they are driving said car. Take my word for it, the prey does not live and you can not find it before it dies unless it dies on the spot. The person who finds it later is in great danger.

Just saw one on my way home tonight. There's no question that the bear population is up and on the move. Where I live we'd see one or two during normal times. I've seen bears more times than I can count already this year.

I like black bears. I feel bad for them when they get brave and come into neighborhoods and get themselves in trouble. But, they are a threat to people. Not that they attack people very often. I'm not scared of them at all. But I do have to watch out for my pets. And once in a while one will get crazy and break into a house.

In short, though I like the bears, it's time for another hopefully well-managed hunt. They need to move back up in the woods, and the population needs to be thinned. Sorry bears. Good luck, I hope you make it back into the woods and away from trouble.

“Michelle Obama been in NJ lately?”

LOL! She was in my driveway a couple of summers ago. All I saw was a big butt and a little tail in my garbage can, routing out the stale donuts my hubby put in there the night before.

Southeast NY has received 1 inch of rain in the last two months. No doubt this will cause wildlife to follow the water. Excellent call on the water.
