Writer Christopher Hitchens to undergo chemotherapy (Diagnosed With Cancer)

OS ANGELES (Reuters) – British-born author Christopher Hitchens on Wednesday cut short a book tour to undergo chemotherapy, which several media outlets reported was because the heavy smoker has been diagnosed with cancer.

"I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus. This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice," Hitchens, 61, said in a statement released through his publishers Twelve.

A representative for the publisher offered no details beyond the statement.

Hitchens, known to be a heavy smoker, launched a book tour last month to promote his memoir "Hitch 22" which tackles subjects ranging from the Middle East and Zimbabwe to his friendships with prominent writers including Salman Rushdie and Martin Amis.

As a journalist, critic and war correspondent, Hitchens has carved out a reputation for barbed repartee, scathing critiques of public figures and a fierce intelligence.

In his 2008 book "God Is Not Great", Hitchens put himself on a collision course with major religions with his trenchant atheist views.

Since the British Nationality Act of 1948, there is in general no restriction, in United Kingdom law, on a British national being a citizen of another country as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_nationality_law#Acquisition_of_British_Overseas_Territories_citizenship Prior to 1983, British nationality was transmitted from the father through one generation only, and ONLY if the parents were married in accordance with English Law.

In other words, folks, Obama was not a British citizen at birth. Obama might have been born with no citizenship at all if he was born in Kenya. and not Hawaii.

However, since the people who are pushing this strategy so hard, to the exclusion of evey other strategy, have said that his birth certificate is irrelevant and would make no effort to obtain it, Obama walks, free and clear.

Oh, I’m sure that he’ll get tons of sympathy from the vast majority (if not all) of his fan base because they don’t believe that marriage is even necessary to have a child.

This is the reason why we must continue to push Obama to release, not only his long-form “vault” certificate, but also the very same Certification of Live Birth that he had claimed to have made and posted on the Internet.

Sorry I’m not up on this. The rest: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2280617/posts

Esophageal cancer is deadly, if not caught insitu. This was not early stage esophageal carcinoma. Chemotherapy is not going to be efficacious. He apparently is not a candidate for resection and colonic interposition proceedure. I hope Mr. Hitchens will reconsider his spiritual perspectives, but I fear pride will win the day with him.

“Hitch..I am a survivor of esophageal cancer and am not an expert, but highly suggest that you get even more opinions outside the UK.”

He lives in the US and is a US citizen now.

"One has to wonder if he’ll turn to God in his time of need."

Well, that remains to be seen. At any rate, I suspect he'll be finding out the truth sooner rather than later. I'll be praying for mercy for him.

Here’s a wish for Christopher most of us can agree on.

His snide swipe at “evidentialists” was typical of James White’s own personality defects.... LOL

Yes, but I was diagnosed by three different Drs. in three different stages. Demeester turned out to be right when they did the biopsy after the surgery. All the other Drs. wanted to start with chemo. It was still a tough choice.
It is attractive to start with something that doesn’t involve 12 hours of surgery and 10 days in intensive care with 18 tubes going in and out of you.
In Europe they seem to try the non-surgical methods to avoid the cost of surgery. They also seem to delay the endoscopic inspection of patients until it is too late.
Too many Dr seem to give out antacid pills without doing a visual inspection. I think it is a good idea to have both a endoscope when you hit 55.

Completely agree...
I have acid reflux - had it for 10 yrs before seeking help - GP said get thee to a Gastro-Ent who immediately ordered an endoscopy (bless him) - early Barrett’s - now I get both “ends” looked at in the same procedure as I’m over 50...thank you God for advanced medical technology..
And good luck to Hitchens...best TV ever was his face offs with his bro on CSPAN...intellectual candy...

I’m a radiation oncologist. If one is receiving chemotherapy only for esophageal cancer, the horse is out of the barn, so to speak.

I hate to hear that. So we'll just have to pray for a miracle.

Although I do not agree with a lot of what this man says, I do not wish him harm. I am praying that God uses this time as a wakeup call to him and that through this he will come to know the true creator. I pray for his healing - body, heart and soul. What an awesome testimony he would be to the world of the grace and love of God who NEVER let him go.

I hope he becomes a believer. He has a lot to lose otherwise.

If he’s just getting chemotherapy, it’s already spread. He’ll die of this.

Many take chemo and don't die from the cancer they are being treated for.

Hitchens gave an entertaining address in defence of free speech when Canada was passing it's hate speech laws. Concise and well argued, it's probably worth reflecting on this side of his beliefs under the circumstances.

That’s what’s so awesome about God; he loves Hitchens and Christ died for him and he can still be saved. Think of Paul who hated Christians and were hunting them down to be killed and Jesus spoke to him and from that moment Paul gave all to tell the good news of salvation through Jesus and was the greatest evangelist ever. Hitchens can be healed, he can be saved and he can become a messenger of God. All things are possible.

Exactly so, maranatha. Well stated.

I suspect Hitchens and I would disagree about many if not most things. Still, I hope he can recover from this, and will say a prayer for him.

I was under the impression that dual citizenship was not possible under British law.

**********

That is incorrect. My husband is British-born and became a US citizen about two years ago. He remains a UK citizen unless and until he formally renounces to the proper British authority. He has not done so. Merely accepting US citizenship does NOT invalidate UK citizenship.
