OS ANGELES (Reuters) British-born author Christopher Hitchens on Wednesday cut short a book tour to undergo chemotherapy, which several media outlets reported was because the heavy smoker has been diagnosed with cancer.
"I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus. This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice," Hitchens, 61, said in a statement released through his publishers Twelve.
A representative for the publisher offered no details beyond the statement.
Hitchens, known to be a heavy smoker, launched a book tour last month to promote his memoir "Hitch 22" which tackles subjects ranging from the Middle East and Zimbabwe to his friendships with prominent writers including Salman Rushdie and Martin Amis.
As a journalist, critic and war correspondent, Hitchens has carved out a reputation for barbed repartee, scathing critiques of public figures and a fierce intelligence.
In his 2008 book "God Is Not Great", Hitchens put himself on a collision course with major religions with his trenchant atheist views.

Prayer bump
Prayers for Mr. Hitchens.
Just completing the sentence, hope you don't mind.
Hitchens has carved out a reputation for barbed repartee, scathing critiques of Conservative public figures and a fierce lack of intelligence.
I think this is the truth of the statement.
I hope he gets better ASAP.
sad news.
prayers for a speedy recovery for C.H.
he’s always thoughtful, entertaining and interesting - even if he’s almost always wrong.
Although I disagree with Hitch about almost everything, he believes in his positions, he isn’t just a parrot for the left. He hits back at liberals when he disagrees with them. He is a fine writer and a formidable debator. I can imagine hanging out with Hitch would be a helluva lot of fun. I wish him well and hope for a full recovery.
he’s an American citizen and lives in Washington D.C.
Thanks..it worked. Hope they pass the info along.
After each example of their corruption and dishonesty he cited, he would rhetorically ask the crowd, Can you eat enough to vomit enough?
He HATED them since he first laid eyes on them and has never failed to shout it drunkenly from the rooftops.
I wish him well.
Joining my prayers for him, with others.
Having had chemo, I do not wish that on anyone.
He became an American citizen some years ago. I think he lives here in LA.
Then why put this in the first line of the story?
Now why would you say that? Lots of people who have cancer just get chemo.
I’m glad. Hope they pass it along too. The fact that you are a survivor likely would be an inspiration to him.
Perhaps he would think that it’s just good to know that people care enough to send a note anyway.
I’m a radiation oncologist. If one is receiving chemotherapy only for esophageal cancer, the horse is out of the barn, so to speak.
maybe because he was born there and still has a British accent and he’s just recently become a US citizen(has duel citizenship)..this from the article
Hitchens was born in Britain, lives in Washington D.C., and retained his British citizenship when he also became an American citizen in 2007.
I pray first for his salvation.. time on this earth is short..eternity is not..
