Bags for life could have E.coli
Tests on shoppers bags revealed half contained traces of E.coli, a lethal toxin which killed 26 people in Scotland in 1996 in one of the worlds worst food poisoning outbreaks.
Scientists also found many were contaminated with salmonella.
Reusable plastic shopping bags have become increasingly popular in Britain [and the US; insertion mine] thanks to supermarkets and other retailers giving out millions of free ones to shoppers in the last three years.
It is estimated that there are "hundreds of millions" of bags for life in use in Britain, according to sources within Wrap, the Government's anti-waste watchdog. Because the vast majority of people do not wash their bags after each shopping trip, they could be putting themselves at risk.
The tests were undertaken by the University of Arizona, whose researchers stopped a total of 84 shoppers to check the state of their bags.
The researchers warned the levels of bacteria they found were high enough to cause a wide range of serious health problems and even death.

Please, I beg of you, keep using using them.
I agree.
Alexandria, VA went for Mr. Obama by giving him 73% of the vote. It’s a great city in which to hand out more bags for life. Loaded with liberals.
Grocery carts are among the most unsanitary objects around, so I’m not surprised these reusable bags are too. The fact they’re made from fiber could make them even worse.
maybe they could put them on over their heads and speed things up
And maybe I could learn to spell! Culling the Herd!!!!!!!!
So now, well all use the ceramic coffee cups which are heaped into the dishwasher on a regular basis. No one told her that we now run the (electric) dishwasher more often and longer and consume more water in the cup washing process. Just say’n.
lol, well, once culled no longer heard
ummmm.
Remember when they used to ask “paper or plastic” and then the eco-folks said plastic was better than paper? And the plastic bags would rip before you even got the groceries indoors (unless you double bagged them)?
And then the eco-folks concluded that the plastic bags were worse for the environment (I could always reuse the paper bags with my kitchen garbage) and did away with them?
This fad too shall pass.
PS never buy a used cellphone, too many people using them in the stalls to make this a safe call. Also something to consider when you borrow someone’s cellphone.
Que Evil Genius Laugh.
FREE PENICILLIN!...............
Please, no Helen you-know-who pics.
“Alexandria, VA”
I was born there! Dad worked for the NACA during the War. Went back once, and have no desire to visit again!
EEOOOUUUWWWWW! If you want reuable bags buy the canvas ones and wash them. I take plastic grocery sacks I get from other stores and wrap the raw meat before I put them down into my canvas bags and they get thrown out after that. The canvas gets washed.
then Eurofrisco should all be dead soon.
I hear you!!! ;-)
You mean I can't post this?
