Gov. Chris Christie calls for Republican Party rebranding

By: Maggie Haberman and Ben Smith June 30, 2010 05:06 AM EDT

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday in an interview with POLITICO outlined a path for the GOP to rebrand as the party keeping "our eye on the cash register,” while also praising some Democrats for taking the right approach to tackling major issues like education.

Christie, a darling of conservatives after staring down Democrats over the budget and tax cuts, demonstrated his own distinct brand of conservatism over a breakfast interview. Without naming names, the seven-year former federal prosecutor took a shot at politicians who simply resort to “demagoguery” on controversial - and complex - topics such as illegal immigration.

The sit-down came hours after the newly-minted governor returned home from passing the Garden State’s budget, a plan that mostly reflected what he’d spent months pushing for, but one that also cost him some of his popularity in the polls.

Christie has generally avoided talking about national issues in his first six months in office. But he urged President Barack Obama to take the lead on immigration reform, and said he should keep speaking out on teachers union reforms, an issue that has made the New Jersey governor a controversial figure as he’s aggressively fought for changes in his home state.

But he also took positions more closely aligned with some centrist Democrats on issues such as immigration – an issue he said falls victim to “demagoguery” too easily and one that’s a national problem.

Well as usual the Leftist at Politico's spin is completely contrary to the what was actually said in the interview.

So rather then react to the headline Freepers, read the whole article 1st.

I don’t agree with Christie on the immigration issue. I don’t believe that there is any need to offer citizenship to lawbreakers.

The way to offer them citizenship is to send them back to their own country and let them apply for entry legally.

That would work for me.

Christie has generally avoided talking about national issues in his first six months in office. But he urged President Barack Obama to take the lead on immigration reform,

We don't need reform! We need to strictly enforce our existing federal immigration laws!

Yep, that is the only fair way. It is not at all fair to those that are going throught the legal process.

The GOP stinks as bad as democrats on this issue.

But only after a short waiting period...say 90 years.

“But only after a short waiting period...say 90 years.”

Well, if they start at the end of line, where they should be, that should be just about right!

:)

Reading the article, he didn't really declare very clearly where he stood on immigration, other than the feds should lead. I think he was quoted as saying he didn't like the idea of a path to citizenship, but not much else was said.

I didn't understand why he would think Obama was an "ally" on taking it to the teacher's unions, that was strange.

The other thing I thought of, was this guy reducing all GOP stands to budgeting? It sounded like the trial balloon sent up by Mitch Daniels to me. The article had less substantial info than I would like, that's for sure. So far I've liked how Christie has handled himself, but if he is going the way of Daniels (surrender on everything else), I'll gladly rethink how I see him.

They (the Pols) won’t enforce existing law, then declare the system to be “broken” and urge “reform”. Of course, the reform will be the elimination of existing law entirely (open borders). Then the system will no longer be “broken”—of course, the American people won’t be protected, but that’s not an issue in the eyes of these politicans. They are too busy salivating over cheap labor (on the right), clients for the welfare state (on the left), and voters (mostly ont he left). And if you care about preserving our culture, laws, and standard of living, you are a racist kook.

To me “demagoguery” is when Christie calls Amnesty a “path to citizenship”.

I love the guy as governor of NJ, but NJ is not AZ and he might want to meet with Ms. Brewer before spouting off on the subject.

I don’t know how to post this chart properly. But in case anyone is wondering how many amigos from Mexico we took into this country, it appears that in 1929 we took about 70,000.

I’ll leave it to you to note how many were admitted as we entered into the Great Depression, as demonstrated by the chart (Document 1-A, Part 1).

That should tell you all you need to know about this president who is attempting to legalize millions of illegal immigrants...during OUR Depression.

http://www.learner.org/courses/amerhistory/pdf/Mexican_Immigration_L-One.pdf

*yes I know not all illegals are from Mexico. I was looking for brevity, not a final word.

** if someone else can post the charts, feel free. I suspect there are more immigration charts like this out there, that reflect the same thing.

This is a mark against Christie. The GOP cannot hang all social issues out to dry.

The left never does. In fact, the left uses social issues to acheive their goals.

A person needs to scrap “working with Obozo”. Obozo is a communist and a liar.

I do think there is a power play going on between the Clinton’s and Obama. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see the return of the Hildebeast for 2012.

I'm disappointed he brought it up again.

Also, the working with Bambi thing..........meh. How do you work with someone who hates everything you believe in?

I don’t believe that there is any need to offer citizenship to lawbreakers.

There is none. None.

I don't know what Christie said, but where is this "reform" thing coming from? Some secret agenda of NAFTA?

There are immigration laws now. Why the compulsion to give special privileges to invaders, mostly from south of the border? In an orderly, civil, internationally recognized manner one goes to the local consulate and applies for visa/immigration to the nation of choice, temporary, permanent, or whatever.

Special privileges like such only serve to deprecate international law and order, a "liberal" affliction like in so many other areas - manipulate the law selectively to satisfy your own greed and desires. Throw on top of that the cesspool that Mexico has become, indicator of a self-awareness, self-discipline flaw, governmentally or socially, that only exacerbates the bigotry of the entire issue, and we have the recipe for disaster that lack of integrity always brings. It's like Toad Hall, giving juveniles the run of the mansion.

If the United States is to get its act together, environmentally, energetically, educationally, infrastructure-wise, then "it" needs to be circumspect about the resources available, and the limits of distribution, rather than give in to the greed of Wall Street globalists, Lobbyists, and self-serving, power-hungry Politicians. The US fought and triumphed on two global fronts in WWII with 187 million committed citizens. Now there are 300 million. Let us consider our future beyond the egomania of greed (Bloomberg et.al.).

Ah, yes, the issue is “complex”. So any common sense solution must have been put forth by unthinking knuckle draggers.

He’s sounds pro-amnesty to me. Other than fiscally, he appears to be solid RINO. Jersey can keep him.

I am not one who characterizes immigration as a social issue and I hope Christie isn’t one either.

This is an ECONOMIC issue.

It is bad enough that the Dems snuck an exception to the “public charge” issue in the health care bill (Rick Lowry wrote a piece on this). It violates the long standing covenant that immigrants (legal and otherwise) are ineligible for publicly funded benefits for the first five years of being in the US. That is now GONE. Once Obamacare is in full swing, EVERYONE is eligible.

The US dropped immigration to nearly zero during the depression; even FDR had enough sense not to bring in more workers. Mind you, this was when there was NO welfare state, unlike now.

The Congressional Black Caucus should march, en masse, to the White House and tell him to STFU.
