As we reported earlier, the Senate Armed Services Committee voted to confirm Gen. David Petraeus as Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

I should hope so.
Does this mean that he’ll go quietly into the night?
McCrystal’s career was over. Retirement was the only option. Guess they’re paying him to shut up.
Of course he will, unless Obama is planning to court-martial him.
If McChrystal really voted for nobama and if he was the political lefty that some say, they are just paying him off for being loyal. He’ll retire and not be critical of “the one”.
> “Guess theyre paying him to shut up.” <
No. He committed no prosecutable offense other than poor judgement and therefore was not prosecuted nor punished under the UCMJ. Therefore, he keeps his grade and attendant retirement pay.
I certainly don’t agree with his judgement of keeping some like the rag reporter from the Rolling Stone around him and his staff but then again, from what I’ve read McChystal was a little left of center.... he also voted for Obama.
May God bless you and your family.
Sounds like a bit of a quid pro quo might be involved in guaranteeing the O-10 retirement package.
"under Army rules, McChrystal would have had to serve three years as a four-star officer to retain that rank, with its higher prestige and deeper retirement benefits."
I believe McChrystal who was 100% correct in what he said, violated several rules and regulations about what you can say about a superior. Just 'cause he was correct, doesn't mean he should have said it to the press.
As the wire service points out, "McChrystal had been a four-star general for just over a year when President Obama demanded his resignation as Afghan war commander because of scornful remarks made to Rolling Stone magazine."
Rules don't count for Obama people.
Not necessarily. I'm not sure what McC's permanent grade is, but he only held General for a bit more than a year.
Officers usually have to hold a rank for a certain amount of time to retire at that rank. I had to keep LTC on for three years to keep it in retirement.
Generally speaking, I agree. BUT, that crack he made about Biden. (paraphrasing) "Biden - did you say bite me?. That, comes perilously close to a violation of Article 88.
More to the point here, and what the White House is doing for McChrystal - McChrystal doesn't actually qualify for retirement wearing four stars because he hasn't been in grade long enough. He just picked up his fourth star when he became theater commander. The Secretary of Defense, at the direction of the President, could have reduced his grade at retirement because of this, but they're choosing not to, FWIW.
I counted 'em when he was on TV!!
One, two three four...
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT!!!
If he was an eight-star General yesterday then by golly he oughta be an eight-star general tomorrow!!!
That is just wrong.
LMAO, but it is not right.
No...I think he will get an admin job.
Perhaps he realized Afghanistan is a no-win situation and created a situation to get out without being blamed for failure as a commander.
