JerusalemI visit Israel at least once a year, so I have an opportunity to observe changes in the country's concerns. Never before have I sensed such a mood of foreboding, which has been triggered by two issues above allthe looming impasse in relations with the United States and a possible military confrontation with Iran.
In response to American pressure that began shortly after President Obama took office, the Netanyahu government agree last November to a temporary and partial freeze on construction in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, which averted an immediate crisis. The freeze expires in September, however, and it will not be renewed. As I write, the central committee of the Likud Party is meeting to consider a resolution supporting renewed construction in all parts of the country. Netanyahu has signaled that he will not oppose the resolution, which its proponents describe as a way of pinning him down and removing all ambiguity about Israel's future course. The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the United States in early July and to meet with President Obama. In the face of an Israeli stance that will torpedo the current proximity talks in the fall, what will the president say to him? If Netanyahu leaves Washington without a clear sense of the U.S. stance, he and everyone else will interpret it as a signal that he can stay the course at minimal price.

Didn’t 78% of American (liberal) Jews vote for and still support some muslim somewhere? Did that in any way contribute to Israel’s foreboding?
Seems like when “evil” Bush was in office the Israelis were feeling pretty good.
Seems like when evil Bush was in office the Israelis were feeling pretty good.
Yep, the “Cowboy” covered their behind.
We “had their back”.
Isreal has never needed its ass covered.
I go to Israel at least once per year also, and the sense that I get is utter frustration with obama and his administration. The US has always been a strong supporter of Israel, and they could count on that support. Now obama supports fatah and hamas more than Israel. One has to understand that the make up of Israel is liberal in Tel Aviv and conservative in the rest of the country. They are going through similar politics as us, as there is almost a civil war between liberals and conservatives. Fortunately, I have read the Book and know how it will end.
You are correct. As an American, a conservative and a Jew, I am ashamed. Among the people who get (arguably) more crap than I do are Evangelicals and black conservatives. Both groups, BTW, are inspirational for me.

16 JINOs, not a real Jew in sight!
Why do you keep harping on what atheist people of Jewish descent in the USA voted for?
Who cares?
It has zero to do with Israel or Israel Jewish people.
Israeli/US citizen -— such as myself — voted overwhelmingly for McCain (and Bush before him).
Observant Jewish people are overwhelmingly Republican.
You incorrectly assume that JINOS care about Israel.
Rahm Emmanuel, for example, openly hates Israel.
Isreal has never needed its ass covered.
I know that. But the United States was always there in the past.
“Observant Jewish people are overwhelmingly Republican.”
You coulda fooled me.
‘...impasse in relations with the United States...’
Obama won’t be happy until Israel has been annihilated by his Middle Eastern co-religionists, and still American Jews remain largely in the Democrats’ camp. The entire situation beggars belief.
Thank God for Bibi.
Orthodox voters were north of 80% McCain.
Same voting patterns as evangelicals.
Bibi is a mensch. Obama is... not.
Don’t confuse the predominance of American Jews in this country with that of the Jews in Israel. They are two completely two different groups.
Definitely.
I’m shocked that Israeli’s don’t kick American jews’ asses and send them home on the next plane out.
