NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AFP) Tropical Storm Alex veered away from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill Saturday but experts warned that strong waves and winds could still upset efforts to halt the environmental disaster.
With oil still gushing into the fragile waters after 68 days, President Barack Obama's pointman on the disaster cautioned that volatile weather conditions could cause oil recovery operations to stop for up to two weeks.
"The storm is not an issue for the spill," said National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen, as the Miami-based center showed the storm on a path toward hitting the coast of Belize later Saturday and then moving across the Yucatan Peninsula, dumping rain across Central America.
"We do not see the path of the storm taking into the northeast Gulf -- but that doesn't mean there won't be some wave impact."
At 1800 GMT, Alex was located about 75 miles (120 kilometers) east of Belize City, packing maximum sustained winds of nearly 45 miles (75 kilometers) an hour. Parts of Honduras and Guatemala were under a tropical storm watch.
"We are very pleased that there is no weather impact right now," said BP spokesman Ron Rybarczyk.

Such a stoppage would exacerbate the spill that has defiled the Gulf Coast's once pristine shorelines, killed wildlife and put a big dent in the region's multi-billion-dollar fishing industry.
It would also mean the estimated 30,000 to 65,000 barrels of oil gushing from a ruptured wellhead down on the seafloor would be billowing crude and gas unchecked for days.
An estimated 1.9 to 3.5 million barrels (80 to 150 million gallons) have poured into the Gulf since the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on April 20.

And exactly what in the hell is this supposed to accomplish? Exactly what is the friggin’ point of “protesting against an oil spill? What a bunch of idiots...
You know what it’s supposed to accomplish. It’s supposed to make the idiot lefties feeeeel good about themselves for getting off their lazy rears and protesting. Some of them are aged hippies and others are hippie-wannabes.
Better news than this morning!
OMG...joining hands and all going UUMMMMMMMM...in expecation that the Ghia Godess will suck back all the oil.
Meantime Gov Jindal is busting his back getting stuff done.
Most protesters used petroleum based products to attend the event. Florida derives a substantial part of its economy through tourism enabled by economical private transportation systems. Maybe this group should protest the usage of personal transporation systems.
Who’s that one babe, two to the left of the fairy prince. I’m betting the way she’s dressed she does not hit the beach much.
If not for them, this would have never happened.
"Did we cause that?" Yes, you did!

Someone want to try and explain what "That" thing in black with the bill and cape, is supposed to represent?
A Human Pelican? lol
Looks like the storm is not cooperating with the bozo in the WH. They will close down the operation anyway. Clowns.
It pisses me off that this faggot is ahead in the polls....Is Floriduh about to sport it's collective dunce cap once again?
Well, GOOD. It's about time somebody DID something!
Why are they still referring to Crist as a Republican?
