A new report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) has found that California has the least-educated labor force of any state in the United States, and this may be due to the high levels of immigration in recent decades.
According to the study, 9 percent of California’s population was comprised of immigrants in 1970, but by 2008 it was 27 percent. Forty years ago, the state had the 7th most educated workforce of all U.S. states in terms of the share of workers who had completed high school, but by 2008 it ranked 50th.
The researchers now estimate that one in six workers in the Golden State have not graduated high school.
The report, titled A State Transformed: Immigration and the New California, concludes with the warning that without a comprehensive immigration reform and enforcement, other parts of the country may follow in California’s path.
CIS has also defended the new Arizona immigration law against critics who claim that it could lead to racial profiling of minorities, saying that the law stipulates that police "may not solely consider race, color or national origin" when implementing SB 1070.
It also pointed out that when the state’s governor, Jan Brewer, signed the new law, she also issued an executive order requiring additional training for police officers on what does and what does not constitute "reasonable suspicion."ADNFCR-1961-ID-19830954-ADNFCR
Not “may” involve. It does. I saw a great program on PBS a few weeks ago about the state of our schools relative to business. The main talking points I took with me were:
1. Years ago, businesses were glad to hire HS grads and they could train them to do a job because HS grads had reached a certain level of education and skill (critical thinking skills, could spell, write; do basic math, etc. etc.and maybe even more skills such as those that were taught in Vo Ed programs).
2. American Business can no longer rely on HS grads. The grads coming out now cannot be trained and do not have the requisite education needed.
3. American Business now must hire college educated grads. College is now a sort of credentialing institution that ensures businesses will get the person they used to be able to get from HS.
4. American business is increasingly finding that even college educated is not enough, since even the colleges are turning out dumbos.
5. Problem: What do we do now? Do we send more money, change the institutions, etc. (and this was the point of the whole debate).
Geez, how much did this study of the obvious cost the taxpayers?
You heard about CA welfare recipients using their government-furnished ATM’s at the casinos? How many ways can the tax payer be screwed? Let me count the ways. Oh, wait, that would take too long.
Another reason companies are moving out of the high tech areas of California (besides taxes). They can no longer find educated people to help them grow. If companies don’t grow, they will go out of business. If the people in California don’t educate their children and themselves, they will commit themselves to live in poverty the rest of their lives. One of the problems with this is that the immigrants don’t care if they live in poverty. With this attitude, they will pull the rest of the residents down with them. California best start realizing this before it’s to late.
I am 6th generation Californian and grew up in the electronics industry. At one time it was a beautiful state. We had no problem finding employees or people that were trainable. Today, they not only do not have the education but are not trainable. The immigrants in the State are useless.....illegals from Mexico. As I stated, my family helped California develop and I hate the idea of having to move out, but I am honestly considering moving and taking my company with me.
And .. for years, the left made it mandatory to teach these Hispanic immigrants IN SPANISH.
That little item made it impossible for a lot of these uneducated people to learn English and to integrate into the mainstream. While the left thinks it was doing these people a favor, it was actually depriving them of a better way of life.
Typical of the left, they want to keep the Hispanics as the “worker” class - so they don’t think they deserve education.
A few years ago, the voters of CA got rid of bi-lingual education - and now we have a better class of workers coming on the scene. We have one such in our summer intern program; understands her capability as a worker is totally dependent upon a good knowledge of the English language and always continuing her education.
Our employees have to be fingerprinted to work at our company, so we are confident we don’t have illegals.
I was just being fresh, as it ticked me the L off when I read about Ca and welfare gambling.
I can’t miss a spot to jab that in there, just annoys me so bad.

I dont know about Murdoch but Bloomie is such an egomaniac, he thinks he can fix the situation by spending more taxpayer money on social programs.
Immigration of the right people can be a really good thing for society. In fact bringing in talented, educated, skilled, and useful immigrants is a wonderful thing. Sadly with our system we make it too hard for those people to come in and allow millions of criminals, leeches, thugs, and ghetto rats. California is exhibit A of the consequences of that.

Thank you. You saved me the trouble of posting it. Anyone who has spent any time at all in Mexico realizes that Mexico is sending us their bottom socio-economic layer, the most ignorant, illiterate and the most dysfunctional. We have been taking in Mexico’s dregs for several decades now. American efforts to bring about “equality” for these people are Sisyphusian. Look what they have done to LA. Educated, functional Mexicans have little reason to leave. If we could send all of our poor, illiterate, non-high school graduates to Canada, and most of our criminals, how much better off would the rest of us be?
There was a time when foreigners needed to be able to provide some sort of intellectual benefit to this country.

I work with high school students in CA. I can tell you this: after at least 5 years in our educational system, they still cannot tell me who Thomas Jefferson is and have only a vague idea about Lincoln.
They don’t know how to spell, are not sure what “indent” means, struggle to write a 5 sentence paragraph, have no understanding of phonics, cannot tell you what a veteran is, and hate to read.
Finally, though we provide them free breakfast and lunch, free medical care, free prenatal care (if they need it) and a free education, they root against the US in the World Cup competition and wear the shirts of their “real” country (though many of them were born here).
In two years, they will be voting.
Be very afraid, America. These voters will vote exactly as they are told to by the Democrats and will never do one bit of analysis of the issues.

Well, that headline is a bit misleading... I’d say there’s a correlation with ILLEGAL immigration; the legal immigrants I’ve met and worked with all over these United States are almost all highly educated, motivated, and upstanding people.
On the other hand, those who don’t actually immigrate but simply walk in are generally not.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that CA is now facing Whooping Cough after a 50 year reprieve.
Those of us who grew up in CA are devastated by what has happened to our state. The quality of life here has plummeted.

Though I’ll warn you now that I’m rather opinionated and despise the C/C++ family of languages.
