Maryland To Build Car Charging Stations

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland is using more than $500,000 in federal stimulus money to build at least 64 charging stations for electric vehicles.

The stations will be located in parking garages in Baltimore and elsewhere along Interstate 95.

Another $500,000 will go toward wiring truck stops so truckers won't have to rely on their diesel engines to provide electricity while parked.

General Motors Co. is preparing to roll out the Chevrolet Volt later this year, with automakers following with their own electric vehicles soon after. Maryland officials hope public charging stations will encourage consumers to buy the cars.

The General Assembly has approved a $2,000 tax credit for the purchase of electric vehicles.

Oil will never be “gone”; it will merely become more and more costly to obtain. As the price of production increases, the retail price will increase as well. Ultimately the price will rise to the point where middle-class consumers can not afford to purchase it. At that point, suburbia and the socialist freeway network will begin to die, and good riddance.

(One can make a case that the freeway system in already dying. The motor fuel tax take is already insufficiently large to bear the cost of building and maintaining new roads; from here on, tolls, or some other per-mile use fee, will be required to keep the roads drivable.)

It also bears mentioning that even the richest oil fields are useless if they are cut off from the U.S. Today, the U.S. military can guarantee our supply of foreign crude. Tomorrow? Unknown. Forever? Unlikely. When the U.S. military becomes unable to guarantee a continuous supply of foreign oil, petroleum will become a strategic mineral, and will be largely reserved for official and military use. Any gasoline released to the civilian market will be rationed, as it was in World War II.

I don’t know how old you are, but it’s likely that you do not remember the 1973 and 1979 oil shocks. The first one dealt the U.S. economy a blow from which it has never recovered; the second made a similar impact, and might easily have led to a nuclear war. Each was caused by a Middle East conflict that was small by modern standards. What do you think is going to happen when the Iranians and the Israelis finally have it out for real, nukes and all? My guess: $20.00 per gallon... or “for official use only”.

I was around for the bogus oil crises of the 70’s. Since then, we’ve learned that the US is sitting on top of a lot of oil. Back in the Cold War, we adopted a strategic plan to burn up the rest of the world’s oil before we started seriously hitting our own supplies. It worked for a while, but after the Cold War ended, we lost our focus and kept buying the foreign oil even if it increased our debt. If the middle east erupts into war, it will take years to ramp up our own production—thanks to the enviro-leftists, but we can always reduce consumption considerably.

Remember the early 80’s when the average V-8 had less than 150 hp and most cars had less than 100 hp? We can produce a car with 150 hp now that gets 30 mpg. We may have to just outright ban any vehicle that gets less than 30 mpg, but we’ll be in a national crisis, so sacrifices will be necessary especially if the alternative is to be herded like animals into the city.

Of course, the average FReeper will balk at the idea of driving an economical car because they seem to hit things a lot—or at least you would think that from their typical comments to a post like this. And the average “elite” leftist would consider himself above the masses and more deserving of a gas guzzler even if the rest of us get forced into econoboxes.

But if gas ever does hit $10/gal, our economy will be destroyed and the people will demand communism and the American experiment will be over. So don’t expect much help from the government on averting this because its been their plan all along.

So, I kind of agree with you.

If this is all such a great idea, why not let private enterprise build the charging stations. That way, all the enormous profits from the billions of people owning funny cars can provide a never-ending stimulus to the economy.

If, on the the other hand, the gubermint owns the stations, and the idea turns out to be a costly dud because of the masses reluctant to buy the funny cars, the losses can be be borne by the taxpayers....but there will be so many new government jobs manning the stations, that it will be a stimulus to the economy.

On the other hand.....

HELP ! STOP ME BEFORE I KILL AGAIN.......

Plenty of Americans understand that communism will alter availability from "scarce" to "nonexistent."

There's a high likelihood that if gas hits $10 per gallon our politicians will be on the receiving end of a Mussolini lamppost moment.

If gas hits ten bucks per gallon no one is going to have the time for stringing anybody up; we are all going to be spending our time scrambling for the cash needed to buy food.

The price of food is linked by an iron chain to the price of oil: they don't rise at the same time, but let the price of oil go up and within a few weeks the chain will jerk taut. Modern American agriculture is utterly dependent upon cheap oil -- fertilizers, lubricants, fuel for farm equipment, power for the processing plants, fuel for reefers, the Diesel needed to run the trucks that bring the food to your grocer. No cheap oil = no cheap food.

Do you see now why I'm saying that gas is likely to be rationed? Should oil supplies become unavailable or unreliable (as they will when the balloon goes up in Iran), Uncle Sam will simply buy up all stocks of POL (petroleum and its distillates) and dole them out according to national security needs. The Pentagon gets first call; then the national transportation providers; then agriculture, industry, and power production. Any fuel left is probably going to be held in reserve in case the war spreads to our own shores (e.g. if the Muzis blow up one of the big refineries).

"This station is open to OFFICIAL VEHICLES ONLY by order of the Emergency Resources Authority, Federal Emergency Management Agency. Ref. Executive Order 10997."

You've forgotten American ingenuity; that's easy to do if you only focus on the cities. Leave any major city and wander the sticks. If you know where to look, you'll find quaint unnuanced folk with absurd and laughable hobbies including growing food, raising farm animals and making “shine.” Incidentally, these aren't the government subsidized corporate farmers. Most of them are retirees living off their pensions and doing something they enjoy.

Perhaps they don't make up the bulk of the population, but there are plenty of them and they'll have access to food, shelter and “fuel.” Additionally, they might not live on top of each other, but they stand ready to help their neighbors, when needed.

These simple folk aren't like the the sophisticated city dwellers with whom your are more likely acquainted. They're polite but well armed people, prepared to protect their own. You might think that a vast socialist controlled army would roll over them easily. Perhaps, but these patriots are the parents and grandparents of the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen serving in the armed forces. A fair number of these young warriors will remain true to their oath to defend The Constitution of the United States and join the evil "militia" movement.

Perhaps this token resistance wouldn't be enough to crush a communist dictatorship, but it would certainly hamper their efforts. Even though some prefer to kowtow to tyrants, not everyone shares this lack of courage. Whatever happens, it's sure to be one hell of a show!

I've rambled a bit much; but please humor me. You described a very bleak scenario. If it should come true, and you have a choice, would you rather live in chains or die free?

Or pulling food out of the river.

Whatever happens, it's sure to be one hell of a show!

Let the bad guys come into my area and there Will be a show.
I could sleep through it and let the neighbors handle it.

I won't, but I could.

Well said, Sir.

Thank you for your kind response. Funny thing is B-Chan still hasn’t answered.

I think B-Chan lacks personal conviction in his ideologies.

It would be entirely appropriate for me to hit the Abuse button here, since your ad hominem posts are in violation of the posting guidelines. However, as a member of FR since 1998, I know that only pansies hit the Abuse button. I will therefore simply ignore you and your bumper-sticker "ideas" from now on.

Hey B-Chan. I buried my mother in December. If you knew, maybe you wouldn’t have made your cute remark about ejaculating in her face. Then again, who knows; you’re such a classy guy. Was I rude to you? I don’t remember making dispariging remarks about any member of your family.

I don’t know what your problem is and I really don’t care. Mash abuse on any post I made to you and let the powers that be decide who is right and who is wrong.
