BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland is using more than $500,000 in federal stimulus money to build at least 64 charging stations for electric vehicles.
The stations will be located in parking garages in Baltimore and elsewhere along Interstate 95.
Another $500,000 will go toward wiring truck stops so truckers won't have to rely on their diesel engines to provide electricity while parked.
General Motors Co. is preparing to roll out the Chevrolet Volt later this year, with automakers following with their own electric vehicles soon after. Maryland officials hope public charging stations will encourage consumers to buy the cars.
The General Assembly has approved a $2,000 tax credit for the purchase of electric vehicles.
“My friend, the era of the gasoline-powered private automobile is drawing to a close, ...”
No it is not. Been hearing that since Carter. Bushwa.
What percent of our oil comes from that Middle East you worry may glow in the dark? Have you ever heard of coal gasification?
Finally, assume that somewhere “out there” oil gets that pricey, you don’t think alternative that preserve the freedom of the individual vehicle won’t be found? You have no sense of technology, psychology or history if that is the case. We are NOT going to voluntarily reurbanize.
And, where does their eletrical power come from?
“And, where does their eletrical power come from?”
You my man is a Buzz kill man.
Like the private sector couldn’t do this?
Oh, goody, I get to pay for other people to purchase electric cars.
Maryland "Freak State" PING!
“truckers won’t have to rely on their diesel engines to provide electricity while parked.”
Uh, I don’t think that’s the main reason they run their rigs while resting.
“the heaviest trucks ....use electric motors on the wheels in lieu of transmissions.”
Huh?
Please, enlighten me, seriously. I hope you’re not referring to the true giants which work in giant quarries.
Is there an OPM Ping list?
Are you seriously proposing that a 'third rail' be installed on every street and highway in the country? Do you realize the liability in doing that? What are you smoking?
Shrooms man, it's all about the shrooms man.
/LMAO

Although third-rail sytems are proven effective against jaywalking scofflaws,
communities ruled by bleeding heart liberals may opt for catenery instead.
In the meantime, the MD DMV customer service still SUCKS!!
Maryland has a nuke at Calvert Cliffs. Expansion planned, but then budget cut.
So the short answer to my question is “No, Maryland is not building nuke plants.” :)
>> The time is not far off when retail gasoline will cost $20.00 per gallon, or (more likely) will be “for official use only”.
Oh cool. I saw that movie. Then we all get to drive around in the desert in strange high-powered vehicles, shooting each other with crossbows and using parking meters as maces as we fight for that last precious drop of gasoline so we can continue to fight for the next last precious drop.
Seriously, my teacher in 2nd grade told us that all the oil would be gone before we were 30 years old and that we’d be in an ice age by the year 2000. I’m 47 now and there’s still lots of oil, and the ice age has been replaced by Glowbull Warming. Every oil shortage has been due to politics, not supply.
I guess you go in head first.......
Smokin’ hot......
