CHICAGO (Reuters) Nine out of 10 Americans eat too much salt with most of them getting more than twice the recommended amount, according to a survey by U.S. government researchers.
They said an estimated 77 percent of dietary sodium comes from processed foods and restaurant foods.
"Sodium has become so pervasive in our food supply that it's difficult for the vast majority of Americans to stay within recommended limits," said Janelle Peralez Gunn, public health analyst with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who led the study of salt consumption.
"Public health professionals, together with food manufacturers, retailers and healthcare providers, must take action now to help support people's efforts to reduce their sodium consumption," Peralez Gunn said in a statement.
The study said most Americans consume 3,466 milligrams of sodium a day, more than twice the recommended limit. Much of the excess sodium comes from foods like pizza, cookies and meats, it said.
The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend eating no more than 2,300 mg of sodium per day. Proposed new guidelines for 2010 would lower that to 1,500 mg.
Eating too much salt can raise blood pressure, which can cause kidney failure and strokes. The Institute of Medicine in February declared high blood pressure a "neglected disease" that costs the U.S. health system $73 billion a year.
According to the CDC survey, grain-based foods account for the biggest proportion of salt in the American diet, providing 36.9 percent of the total average intake of 3,466 milligrams.
That is followed by foods containing meat, chicken and fish, which account for 27.9 percent.

The Rats are trying to relieve you of all that destructive “freedom”. Don’t worry, your chains will be custom made and you’ll hardly even notice them after awhile.

Eulle Gibbons died of an Aortic dissection at age 64.
All that healthy food kept him alive that long..../s
To he** with the CDC and all the Ivy Leaguers who run the place.
According to MY research, 9 out of 10 people are eating the right amount of salt, one out of 10 is salt deprived. LEAVE US ALONE!!!!!
Where ever that is Beavis, we're there Dude!
Plus, they would register you as a dem and let you vote 3 or 4 times.
If we stayed within their recommended limits on salt, fat, sugar, etc, fast food and restaurants would be no more, what we could eat would be extremely limited and we would be dead or sickly and unable to produce/do anything.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist or anything but this is ridiculous.
Am I being redundant here?
fucdc. biter meg.
They’ll regulate it until people are dropping dead of hyponatremia, and then say “Americans must increase their salt intake.” Or, “Never mind” and then off to the next crusade.
I have no earthly idea why you believe that. The name of the organization is, "Centers for Disease Control and Prevention". Do you see the word "infectious" in there, anywhere.
It's mission from Congress is to research, educate and develop prevention and treatment programs for all diseases, including heart disease.
One word: Jimm Fixx.
By that logic they should be tackling mental diseases, you know things like: PTSD, Conservative-, and rational-thought.
{Remember who is in charge of defining what a disease is...}
They do "tackle" mental illness in the form of a research forum where mental health practitioners and researches exchange best practice ideas and theory. Their parent organization, the National Institute of Health has more robust mental health research programs and of course the FDA, approves medications for mental illness.
Good idea, just because a healthy living advocate died of a pre-existing physiological abnormality, you want people to ignore reasonable diet advice. Smart.
Hopefully, you haven't had children yet. It would be upsetting if you're circumventing the laws of natural selection.
My body is smarter than the CDC.
When will conservatives use this CDC report to finally go after all the free breakfast, lunch and dinner programs from public schools? They are obviously the places giving the nation’s kids too much salt.
/not really sarc
What’s gonna happen with this is if everyone cuts their salt intake, then their iodine intake will become too low with whatever associated problems that will entail.
