Well two things. Rodents and other vermin are attracted to CO2 production (aka hot air) Since Dear Reader is the world's largest source of C02, it is only natural he attracts vermin.

Rodents and other vermin are attracted to dead flesh. Since it is painfully apparent Dear Reader is dead from the neck up, it makes complete sense that vermin find him attractive
