WHAT MAKES A DAD
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad.

Excerpted from the Philadelphia Daily News
Fathers Day
By Christine M. Flowers
Philadelphia Daily News
PASSING through the displays at the drugstore this week, I noticed an abundance of Father’s Day cards targeted at nontraditional dads.
People like “The Man Who Raised Me” or “The Person I Always Thought of as Dad” or “The Man Who Married My Mom” or even “My Biological Dad.”
There was also a wide selection of African-American-themed cards that made it abundantly clear just how very important it was to honor fatherhood in the black community.
Clearly, fathers are fundamental - not optional accessories or casual acquaintances. And that’s especially true for boys.
Sometimes, though, boys don’t have the luxury of a father, biological or otherwise. There may be no Daddy taking them to the Phillies game. No Grandpa waiting to teach them how to fish. No Uncle expert at hoisting them on his broad shoulders. Not even a much older brother, willing to share his electronic games.
There might be no one, except a group of men who ask only one question, with open arms: Would you like to join?
GENERATIONS of boys have said yes, allowing these adult Scout Leaders to keep helping, keep caring for and keep inspiring those sons-by-proxy.
How fitting that it’s Father’s Day, remember your Scout Dads too.

Mine passed in 1998 - we still miss him dearly - the only positive i can put on it is that he didn't live to see 9/11 and the current regime.

Crappy Oregon weather, but not unprecedented according to my buddy, the fired, (non-globalwarming believing) state climatologist..he had an article a few weeks ago saying we can expect a cooler than usual summer based on past climate records, we'll see!
Anyway, looking forward to spending some quality time with my kids tomorrow and hopefully getting fed for free...LOL!

I hope you get the King For A Day treatment from them! They will appreciate you more and more each year, especially when they become a parent, as we all did our Dads!

Speaking of the 23rd Psalm in Germany, Franz Schubert wrote a setting of that pslam in German. Regrettably, it doesn't scan in English.
It's for female quartet with piano accompaniment in the upper register of the piano. It was intended to sound like four angels accompanied by a harp.
I saw it done eight years ago, and it's rather striking. It's something of a standard hymn in the German-speaking world.
