Egypt opposition angered at government for allowing the fleet of more than 12 ships to cross Egyptian manned waterway, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reports.
By Jack Khoury
More than twelve United States Naval warships and at least one Israeli ship crossed the Suez Canal towards the Red Sea on Friday, British Arabic Language newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported Saturday.
According to the report, thousands of Egyptian soldiers were deployed along the Suez Canal guarding the ships' passage, which included a U.S. aircraft carrier.
The Suez Canal is a strategic Egyptian waterway which connects between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.
According to eyewitnesses, the U.S. battleships were the largest to have crossed the Canal in many years, Al-Quds reported.
Egyptian opposition members have criticized the government for cooperating with the U.S. and Israeli forces and allowing the ships' passage through Egyptian territorial waters.
They said they viewed the event as Egyptian participation in an international scandal, and added that the opposition would not sit with its arms crossed while the country allowed a fleet of U.S. and Israeli military ships to cross.

WOW
We also visited Mighty Mo about 4 years ago- probably the most awesome tour I have ever taken. The guides are especially knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The anteroom where MaCarthur and Nimitz et al gathered just before meeting the Japanese was chilling (in a good way).
This a must do for anyone visiting Oahu.
The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) and ships from participating nations take part in a NATO mine countermeasures exercise upon the completion of Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFX). JTFX is a scenario-driven tactical exercise supporting major combat operations for the Harry S. Truman Strike Group. The exercise provides training for the strike group to proceed into a Fleet Synthetic Training - Joint (FST-J) exercise for final deployment certification.
The Arizona memorial is about 150 yards from the Missouri’s bow. The location signifies the beginning and end of the war.
On the Missouri’s port side, a canvas awning shelters the brass deck marker where MacArthur stood during the ceremony. There are copies of the surrender documents in a large case and the 31 star flag that Commodore Perry took ashore in the 1853 opening of Japan to the west.
We spent about an hour on the various decks and inside the battleship. The control room with ancient round radar screens complimented by computerized missile launching equipment was stunning...
It could be. If an east coast carrier is deploying to the Indian Ocean then the task group would transit the Suez Canal.
The beverage cart was to have given him the message, but at this time is still hunting him down. He may be looking for a lost ball...
Thunder on the plains. Hope they use some pirates as target practice before waving to Mahmoud.
Great story. When our boys were younger we went with our Cub Scouts for a sleepover on the USS New Jersey. It was an amazing experience for everyone, and the kids just loved the awesome display of power. We took our sons to see the USS Intrepid before it was taken off display on the Hudson River for refurbishing. Our kids have developed a healthy respect for American naval power, and we've all enjoyed those trips. To me, the ships feel alive with memories and intensity from the men who lived, worked, fought, and died there. It's something I wish all Americans could experience.
Coincidentally, today my husband and sons will be visiting the US Air Force Academy. They left Philadelphia this morning for Denver, en route to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. They're off for 2 weeks of backpacking. They have some great adventures with the Scouts. I wish I could be there too, but it's their guy time.
I have had this experience in many places, but one of the strongest has been in Valley Forge. When I stand on the hills and feel the breeze, I feel like I'm standing on sacred ground. George Washington Chapel in VF Park is an amazing place of beauty and solitude. I was drawn there to pray on the day the plane went down in the Hudson River last winter - just before the accident. I heard about it on the radio as I drove home. Gave me shivers.
I very much doubt that there is an American battleship commissioned and in service. Missouri (a museum piece) was moved to Pearl Harbor from Bremerton several years ago. However I don’t know where USS Wisconsin is.
The Wisconsin is in Virginia. http://www.usswisconsin.org/
...you should try Jerusalem some time.
I hope they cruise past Somalia and Yemen- give the deck crew gunners a chance at a little ‘live fire’-!
obama would see that any U.S. Nave gunner that did that would be court martialed.
Anyone know differently? Anyone know which Carrier it was?
From a mile away a 3 gun salvo will suck the air out of your lungs and make your ears pop.
When the rounds hit the hillside 8 miles away (and I was looking through the big eyes on the signal bridge) they would first leave a little "puff" at point of entry...then the side of the hill would slide away in what looked like a miniature volcanic landslide.
I could still see some great utility for these ships...if for nothing else than the "shock and awe" effect.
