HAMPTON It isn't exactly a fair fight, but the Air Force doesn't mind.
This week, U.S. fighter jets are dueling about 90 miles off the coast of Hampton Roads in scenarios that pit F-22 Raptors from Langley Air Force Base against older F-16C fighters visiting from Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

More F-22s would be good for the USA.
Therefore, 0bama opposes them.
Cool.
Got to see F-22s dog fight F-15s over Kadena AB (Okinawa) when they came over in 2007 - great show.
Good killing people and breaking things
“More F-22s would be good for the USA”
Nah. Obama can’t be trusted with sharp metal objects, let alone the most advanced aircraft in the world.
Wow... any idea why the cost of an F-22 is 10 times that of an F-16?
It’s not just about the research dollars invested, nor the stealth function, is it? I mean the F-117 (not really a ‘fighter’ IMO), didn’t cost upwards of $100,000,000 each, did they?
Total program cost for a F117 was in the neighborhood of $110 million, in the 1980s. Production cost was around $40 million, again in the 1980s.
The F-22 is solar and wind powered?
Bump
It’s the R&D.
The actual unit cost to produce is quite low once the R&D is spent, but that R&D money must be recovered. If we’d buy 700+ like the original plan, we wouldn’t be spending $130 million a copy. But, with less than 200 planned, that R&D cost is spread over fewer airframes.
Same concept with cars, toasters or stealth fighters.
Unit flyaway costs are only the costs in time and materials to build the aircraft, and does not include amortizing the R&D costs of developing the aircraft over the total number of airframes built.
Unit flyaway costs for the last batch of F-22s are around $140 million. Ths Unit flyaway costs for an F-16 is around $30 million.
I have not heard of a flyway cost that high for the F-22. If so, from where are we recovering the R&D costs, because we’re not paying $200 million per copy.
Whoops.
Never mind.
I found some articles that range from $200 million to $350 million, depending upon the program (LRIP and Full Rate).
So the Raptors let the Eagles close enough for a dog fight just for sport?
That’d be fun to watch!
Seemed like F-22s turned in on them every time - F-15s just could not turn as sharp as the Raptors.
I think the idea though, was to get them used to coordinating weapons systems - how F-22s and F-15s would work together in the same airspace.
I was there working Pave Hawks (pilot recovery), though, so details were all second-hand - fun to watch, though.
EA-18G Growler
Don't drink the kool aid. Quite a few Raptors have been smoked in exercises.
