Internal Poll: Shuler 46, Miller 34
CQ Politics ^ | June 16, 2010 | John McArdle

Here's new evidence that North Carolina's 11th district may develop into a "sleeper" race this fall.

Rep. Heath Shuler, a Blue Dog Democrat, is polling under 50 percent in his conservative western North Carolina district and leading his relatively unknown GOP challenger by just 12 points, according polling conducted for the campaign of businessman Jeff Miller.

The survey showed Shuler at 46 percent with Miller at 34 percent and 18 percent undecided.

The poll of 300 likely general election voters was conducted for Miller's campaign June 1-3 by Public Opinion Strategies and had a 5.6-point margin of error.

Miller, who founded a nonprofit group to fly World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to tour the World War II Memorial and other sites, won the nomination in his six-way GOP primary on May 4. Republican officials have said that Miller's ability to avoid a runoff in that contest was a measure of his strength heading into the fall.

But Miller has yet to show the fundraising strength he'll need to compete against the well-known and well-funded Congressman this fall. According to reports filed just before the primary in mid-April, Miller raised less than $130,000 in about three months of campaigning. Shuler had nearly $1.3 million in the bank at that time.

It's likely that Miller's camp will be using the new poll to try pump up his fundraising before the close of the next Federal Election Committee reporting period at the end of this month. He's likely to get a boost in that effort from an endorsement this week from the conservative grass-roots group FreedomWorks PAC, which is also promising to help fund direct mail, get out the vote and other campaign efforts for Miller.

CQ Politics currently rates the general election race Likely Democratic.

Nah, if we can win a Senate seat in Massachusetts, we can win a district that includes Asheville. The rest of the district hates Trashville.

To his credit, Shuler voted against both the so-called ‘stimulus’ bill and the Healthcare (i.e. Health Insurance) bill.

He didn’t vote against it until he knew he was “safe”.

Exactly right. Schuler was one of the ones Pelosi gave the green light to.

He's Mike Ross (D-AR) JUNIOR (Bill Clinton's old chauffeur:))
Although, had QUEEN NANCY not allowed him his protest the whole process would have seemed illegitimate, somehow....

Shuler is happy for Ryan Leaf- that way he isn’t known as the biggest bust in NFL history.

Good news for Miller. I’m in the district and I’ve been wondering how he would fare against Shuler. Miller has his work cut out for him but with Shuler polling below 50% he has a punchers chance. Shuler is a very high profile House member and he gets frequent mention on Rush’s show. Knocking him off would be like icing on the November cake.

Doesn’t make a difference which legislation de did or did NOT vote for..His first vote ois the one that counts..when he votes for Pelosi for Speaker..that’s the one that Miller has to hang around his neck..

To his discredit he voted for Queen Nancy and to install rat committee chairman.

Also he couldn’t complete a pass.
