I've often thought how cool it would be to make it an upscale apartment/sports bar with every sports ppv option already available (NFL, NBA, MLB, NASCAR, etc.). And you're within walking distance of Reliant Stadium for NFL games and special events.
“Nov 18, 2009 ... New tale of Detroit’s woe: Pontiac Silverdome sold for $583,000”
We should lift it out and use it to plug Deep Water Horizon.
As a setting for the climax of Bad News Bears in Breaking Training, I hold the place in awe. I feel honored to live near it, and breathe in it’s asbestos!
The Astrodome is great for High School football playoffs.
I saw a couple of Houston Gambler games there as well as a bunch of Astros games.
I loved the $1 beer and hot dog specials.
best show i ever saw. how they got the acoustics right, I’ll never know.
“...weve torn down Reunion Arena...”
Seriously? Wow, it has been a while since I’ve been to Dallas.
When was it torn down and what are they doing with the property?
*The Astros’ championship banners have been taken down*
Oooh, buddy, them thar division titles is sure somethin’ to be proud of.
They only won a pennant after leaving the ‘Dome.
It’s just going to be a grassy area for now.
I have an idea. Probably a bad idea but I’ll go ahead and throw it out.
Is the Astrodome fairly secure as hurricanes go? Would it make sense to turn it into a regional evacuation facility in the event of a large hurricane approaching and hitting the Texas/Louisiana coast?
I understand that there may be a reluctance to do this given all the problems Houston had from all the Katrina evacuees.
But if the Astrodome is strong enough, maybe it would be sufficient as a temporary facility.
Time was that our schools were emergency evacuation centers. You didn’t need to “hunker down” at home or die in a 150 mile traffic jam.
The Astrodome took on Hurricane Alicia in 1983 and Hurricane Ivan in 2008 without suffering any real damage. There was concern when it was built whether it could stand up to a hurricane (the original plans included a bomb shelter in case of nuclear attack but that was never built) but it has endured wins in excess of 90 MPH now without major damage.
The problem with this idea, of course, is that the Dome costs $2.4 million/yr in upkeep while it sites empty. Does the county really want to spend that much on an evacuation center that may never get used again?
That should have been Hurricane Ike in 2008. My sister in Alabama lived through Hurricane Ivan so I get the two confused. Sorry.
One more Katrina and it’ll be demolished for less than $88 million......bad girl!!!
Have seen Astros, Oilers, Gamblers, George Strait, George Strait, Clint Black, Clint Black, REBA and many rodeos there. Also knew the former manager so got to see a few games from the owner’s box. I had cute girl friends I hung around who didn’t like being part of the general public, haa!
Or Super-Ultra-Mega-Monster-Jumbo-Giant-Extreme-Mega-Church....
You think Joel Osteen is about ready to trade-up?
If he could, he would.
Other than to the opposing team.
Nolan Ryan
“Does the county really want to spend that much on an evacuation center that may never get used again?”
Excellent point. Maybe with some state and federal money thrown in, the cost may get more palatable.
OTOH, maybe it’d be better to rip it down.
I grew up watching them build the Astrodome from Colt Stadium-Now that was a miserable place!Saw thw first game between the Astors and Yankees-Mickey mantle hit the first home runand watched the field crew run around with space helmets and backpacks. I would hate to see it go but I was at the OTC Show in May and it looks forlorn but I would love to see it converted
