In assuring Americans that BP won't control the compensation fund for Gulf oil spill recovery, President Barack Obama failed to mention that the government won't control it, either.
That means it's anyone's guess whether the government can, in fact, make BP pay all costs related to the spill.
Obama aimed high in his prime-time Oval Office address Tuesday night _ perhaps higher than the facts support and history teaches _ as he vowed to restore livelihoods and nature from the still-unfolding calamity in the Gulf of Mexico.

It doesn’t matter how high he aims, he’ll put someone in a bureaucratic position to take all of the arrows slung at the administration. Barak Obama is a liar, a swindler, and a cheat. He’s simply telling people what he thinks they want to hear and has no actual plan to fix anything.
BP does not have enough money to pay for the damages after another few moths of leaking. China will take over BP and we will be screwed again by the incompetant boob in the WH.
SEIU and ACORN [or whatever its new name is] will volunteer to take care of those funds.

Why didn’t they fact check the part where he talked about how we are force to drill a mile out because oil is getting harder to find. Huh? I think we all know that is a lie, but I sure would have liked to see some one call him out on it.

That Third Party “trust fund” really sends shivers up my spine. Just how honest a third party are we talking here? Who will be watching where that money goes? How much of it will go to the Unions he’s giving clean-up jobs too, and how much of that will be returned to the Democrats in campaign donations?
i agree....if he can’t legally make bp create this fund they should tell him to pound sand for these very reasons....
I’m sure this will not happen, but if I were CEO of BP I would tell Barry to stuff it and then file Chapter 11. Every store within 40 miles of the Beltway would be sold out of fresh underwear by dinner time.
The brits are ususally rather polite fellows, but if ozero doesn’t ease up they might just do that. Declare chapter 11, close down all the retail outlets and offices and pull out of this country overnight. But that may be obama’s endgame anyway. They are British after all. obama has a history if insulting them.
Some of us remember when there were still a few dollars in that Social Security Trust Fund.
That was a long, long, long time ago, however.
If the Funds and fines went into a Trust Fund administered by the governors of the gulf states and affected states, it might be viable. [Although, I recall that tobacco settlement that got pilfered by the states.]
When hurricane and tropical storms move into the gulf region, they are going to be blowing oily rains northward into states that do not border on the gulf. Those states are going to be demanding clean-up compensation, too.
This disaster could get to be even worse, if a couple of hurricanes enter the gulf anytime soon.
