President Obama's Oval Office speech last night focused on the Gulf oil catastrophe, but its true purpose was impossible to miss: shoring up the president's tanking popularity.
Some 57 days after the BP oil rig blew -- triggering an underwater oil gusher that's yet to be contained -- a majority of Americans, polls show, think Obama's been too detached from the crisis.
Thus, the president is taking a new tack: huffing and puffing.
"Tonight, I've returned from a trip to the Gulf Coast to speak with you about the battle we're waging against an oil spill that is assaulting our shores and our citizens," he said.
But unless Obama knows something no one else does, it's not an assault, but a catastrophic accident -- though the term does build on a theme he began Sunday by comparing the spill to 9/11.
And that was a grotesquerie: As New Yorkers know best, the attack that day was a premedi tated act of war.
Equally off-base is his new approach to the spill: demonizing BP beyond reason.

He intends for energy cost to skyrocket high enough to make stupid green plans feasable.
His ignorance about America is startling.
At no time did America think we couldn’t meet the challenges of the wars or getting safely to space.
America has ALWAYS had a CAN DO attitude.
Guess he never heard of Rosie the Riveter, the extraordinary test pilots, Alan Shepherd, or all the other men and women who met every challenge with faith, ingenuity, and PATRIOTISM.
The White House invaders are desperately trying to draw parallels to something...to ANYTHING!
If his intention wasa to shore up sagging ratings he better find himself a new speechwriter.
It was a total Fail.
I wonder if he’s heard of FReepers?
I doubt if he can be stopped in time.
Good point. Is he ‘confusing’ the despair and hopelessness his own groupies feel (even Spike Lee cannot motivate Obama to DO something) with the need for him to ‘boost’ American can-do attitude? OR is his one and only flailing grasp at that concept he cannot understand, leadership?
Or is it more calculating? Just as one blogger noted that Obama doesn’t like people calling the oil slick his ‘own Katrina’, so he has raised the image of 9/11 - he wants us to rally around him as people rallied around Bush, and he wants us to respect him for ‘protecting us’ etc. He wants BP to be ‘his own 9/11’.
Maybe this current pointless attempt to imply that Americans have given up on a solution, but he hasn’t, to recast the rejection his own groupies feel for him as POTUS. He wants them to believe the despair they feel isn’t about him after all.
Attempting to triangulate?
And he’s working hard to create jobs. He just created one last night — yet another czar.
Obama - AWOL from the battle being waged against the oil Spill. What a Kenyan turd.
I was a young child during WW II.........there were blackouts, rationing coupons for everything from food to fuel.
Following the war we all contributed to Care Packages even when we hardly had enough money to get through the month and pay the rent.
Families helped each other and I can never remember a Woe is Me attitude. Women entered the workforce taking jobs that men used to hold before they went to war.
Classrooms were jammed with thirty or more kids. No parents went whining to the administration either. We behaved or else. We learned out lessons well.
Played hopscotch on the front walk. All we needed for a toy was a small piece of chalk. The greatest treat we could have was a piece of Bazooka bubble gum which we saved on the bed post overnight.
Someone Please Tell The Moronic Obozo the Clown to Basically Shut Up and Go Away. The Keystaone Cops could have done a better job as dog catchers than the Imbecile in the Whine HOuse.
Well... did it lose its flavor? ;)
Because he has no idea what it means to BE an American.
I preferred Double-Bubble...
