And, so it begins. You voted and so did we, and at the end of a month-long process, were ready to start revealing Gibson.coms Top 50 Guitarists of All Time.

Most people will take emotion over skill any day.
That puts Jack White in over “shredders”. Not to mention he kicks ass, even on drums.
Oh...I forgot Dave Mason!
Also, every guitarist list always has Jimi Hendrix at #1. Jimi Hendrix made a couple of recognizable songs: Purple Haze, Along the Watchtower, Fire, Are You Experienced?...etc are great songs. He was great experimenter, but he was no Jimmy Page. Page with Led Zeppelin created 10+ entire albums of great songs not to mention all concerts they sold in the 70's and of course the most overplayed song ever Stairway to Heaven besides Bohemian Rhapsody (where's Brian May on this list?)
You can't be a great guitarist without a great band unless you happen to die early like Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan. Page had Zeppelin, Clapton had the Cream and Derek & the Dominos, and Steve Vai had David Lee Roth for album or two. Randy Rhoads had Ozzy for a couple of albums too
Cobain and Prince should not even be on the list. Where's the guy from UFO, Michael Schenker? He should definitely be on the list. I'll admit I don't know much about country or jazz, but shouldn't Gibson.com list Les Paul closer to the top 10 since their most famous guitar is named after him?
Speaking of Bill Nelson, I did a somewhat humorous cover of his Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape. Great guitar player nonetheless:

All our good Guitars players and it could be argued that they should be on such a list but you will even hear Keith Richards say that Les Paul did things on a guitar that made him go Huh? How did he do that?
And Ranking Robert Johnson below Clapton will get you a stern talking to by Slowhand. He ranks Johnston as the Greatest ever (there is video of Clapton explaining a riff Johnston is doing on Hell Hound (IIRC) and he says the reason he is explaining the riff rather than playing it is because he can't do it. I've talked to 100's of guitar players who can't either nor have they met anyone who can reproduce it exactly. And Keith Richards response to the song the first time he heard it was "Who is the guy playing the second guitar?"
I think these rankings of guitar players is absurd - but I love the playing of Dave Davies - if there ever was an under recognized player, it’s Dave.
Esteban!!!
John Hiatt is one of the best songwriters of our time.
Kerry King!
Page is a great producer but has been the sloppiest guitarist i’ve ever seen live.
Zakk wylde.
How could Metheny not be on the list. His Orchestrion Tour was easily the most incredible thing I've ever seen, using the guitar to control a bunch of different instruments. If you didn't know any better, you'd think he had a full band there.
Duane Allman 29?
wtf
I don’t even play and know that is bullshite
When Johnny Winter was wound up very few could come near him. Saw him at his first Fillmore East show..Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Start with Les Paul.
the newer heavy/death metal guitarists blow any of the 60s/70s rock guitarists away
Love to see an example of what you are talking about. Speed doesn’t mean skill
Just in the first pass,
* Kurt Cobain doesn't belong in the Top 500, much less the Top 50. What a no-talent a**clown of a waste of studio time! Same goes for Jack White, who at #13 has to be the most ridiculous ranking in the survey. The ear-splitting, out of tune shrieks that emanate from my 16-year old niece's guitar reflect more talent than anything that ever came from Cobain or White.
* Lou Reed and Neil Young do not belong in the Top 50 guitarists. Top 50 songwriters maybe, but as guitarists, neither are particularly talented or groundbreaking. If you're going to have them in the Top 50, then where is Joe Strummer? He was as good a guitarist and songwriter as Reed or Young
* Dave Gilmour and Slash are definitely ranked too low, and Angus Young is ranked too high! Angus is good, but he's not that good. Slash is a Top 25 talent, and Gilmour is definitely Top 20. While other guitarists were trying to see how many notes they could cram into a solo, Gilmour was doing more with one note than anyone else. He picks one perfect note, fits it into a song and lets the colors change around it. He's a master of his instrument, deserving of a much higer ranking than #41. Dumba** Jack White isn't qualified to wash David Gilmour's Jockey shorts!
* Chuck Berry and Keith Richards are definitely not deserving of Top 5 rankings, or even Top 25. Both are competent rhythm guitarists, but never really broke any ground. Meanwhile, SRV didn't even crack the Top 10? Gimmie a break!
* Where are Carlos Santana and Eric Johnson? Once again, Kurt "A**clown" Cobain and Jack "Talentless Noodler" White make the Top 50, but Santana and Johnson don't? Bull sh**!
Okay, /rant.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Amen! Plus now Gilmour can win the Dwight D Eisenhower look-alike contest. ;)
Wow! It's good to see there are other people around here who know Rory (RIP). I still listen to 'Tattoo' (bought the record at college circa 1973) from time to time.
