In three and a half years of blogging, this has been my single most unpopular post. Theres little point, I know, in reminding readers that my support for Barack Obama was qualified; that I simultaneously endorsed GOP Congressional candidates; that I never saw Obama as a messiah and, indeed, was repelled by the millenarian fervour of his supporters. Nor is there much purpose in rehearsing John McCains shortcomings. The fact remains that I backed the Democrat.
I was wrong... All these things are minor irritants compared to the way the Obama administration is backing Peronist Argentinas claim to the Falkland Islands or, as Obamas people call them, the Malvinas. British troops were the only sizeable contingent to support the US in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have fought alongside America in most of the conflicts of the past hundred years. Yet, when the chips are down, Obama lines up with Hugo Chávez and Daniel Ortega against us.
Not that we should feel singled out. The Obama administration has scorned Americas other established friends. It has betrayed Poland and the Czech Republic, whose Atlanticist governments had agreed to accept the American missile defence system at immense political cost, only to find the project cancelled. It has alienated Israel and India. It has even managed to fall out with Canada over its Buy American rules and its decision to drill in disputed Arctic waters. Never has there been a worse time to be a US ally....

Smart guy. He should have known better. We are FR certainly did.
In a nutshell...
Is he writing as a British immigrant to America? As an American living abroad in England? Or as someone from across the pond who endorsed a candidate in our elections without being able to cast a ballot himself?
I didn’t know of Mrr. Hannon’s support of the 0-bomb until now. Fortunately Mr Hannan didn’t have a vote. But unfortunately the anointed one didn’t need it.
OK thst’s one, let us hear from the rest of you!
Good for a Brit to finally see this. But lets remember,,the British heavily backed Obama by over 70%. They did it precisely because Obama trash talked America, and they liked that. To him that meant he is “with” England and Europe, and against the USA. They loved that. He just didn’t accurately predict Obama the sociopath would turn on England too.
But he was just fine with Obama hating America, and wanting to introduce socialism here.
If he says something unusually good about Sarah, i might change my stance on his change of heart.
Tell you what Hannan, when the only other viable candidate was telling U. S. Citizens and the world that he admired Democrats and their goals, and that they didn’t have to be afraid of an Obama presidency, I’m inclined to give you a mulligan.
This old world was screwed from the gate in that race.
Two bad both horses couldn’t have fallen, developed broken legs and been shot, so we could do it all over again without a yearling and a swayback.
Or a US citizen
When you look at Obama’s pattern of behavior, it is quite clear his intention is to tear down the U.S. and its Western alliances in favor of its new matrix - socialism/fascism with a side dish of islam.
He is single-handedly the most dangerous President this country has ever elected - ever.
A spectator watching our elections from the peanut gallery with intrest. I guess we are the big stage and the super power for now. He was backing a winner like you would in the Olympics or the Super Bowl..atleast he admits he was wrong.
Let me tell you though, his heart was not skipping beats on election night. Mine sure was. That was pure horror,
A little late to the dance, Hannan. What did you think he was going to do/be? What is it with all these Europeans who think it’d be cool and so deliciously avant garde to have an exotic dalliance yet bitch like hell when they wake up with Syphilis in the morning?
“when the only other viable candidate was telling U. S. Citizens and the world that he admired,,,,,,,,and that they didnt have to be afraid of an Obama presidency”
Strong point you have there,
Remember, the British and Canadians think that we're the land of robber barons and the wild west. The just want us to become "civilized". I guess he didn't notice a certain lack of sense on the D ticket.
Oh it only took him how many trillions of dollars to realize that.
I’m usually in awe of Daniel Hannan’s intellegence and perceptiveness.
However, I’m quite disappointed in him that he didn’t see this coming. I knew what Obama was going to be like (especially towards Britain) before he had even won the Democratic Primaries. If a humble Uni student (as I then was) still in his 20s with below-average people skills and whose experience of the real world was quite limited could see this, why couldn’t people like Hannan and many other of my compatriots who were ostensibly older, wiser and in a position to know better, see this?
Yeah. Thanks, Daniel. Love ya, brother. But, kinda late for that, don’t ya think???
