New Census data shows the continued trend that the United States is becoming a nation increasingly less white.
According to this latest report, 48.6% of children born in the U.S. between July 2008 and July 2009 were non-white minorities. Thats up two percentage points from two years earlier, and soon the figure will cross the 50% mark.
The largest growth demographic is Hispanics, who accounted for almost 55% of our population growth. And, most of this growth two thirds came from births, not from immigration.
Aside from the knowledge that the country is becoming more colorful, an obvious thing weve got to be thinking about is what this means politically. Given that Democrats have been getting the majority of Hispanic and black votes the two largest minorities the straightforward conclusion appears to be that demographic trends favor the Democrat Party.
In the 2008 elections, white voters, for the first time ever, accounted for less than 75% of the total vote. Its been noted that if each ethnic group voted as it did in 2008, but made of up the same percentage of the electorate as it did 20 years ago, John McCain would be our president today.
Clearly, demographic realities present real challenges to the Republican Party and the values that it is supposed to be championing limited government and free markets.
Most recent polling from Gallup shows Hispanics generically favoring Democrats over Republicans by 2 to 1.
Republicans have got to make headway with this population.
We need them for building the political consensus to make the critical changes to fix our country - cutting the massive growth in government that Democrats have put in motion, cutting spending to eliminate trillion dollar deficits, reducing our now massive $13 trillion dollar debt, and to come up with creative solutions to the $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities were now looking at in our major entitlement programs Social Security and Medicare. And, of course, holding the line on taxes.
Otherwise stated, if Republicans cannot start pulling in a bigger chunk of this Hispanic vote, it will be tough to be optimistic that well be able to reverse the direction that Democrats have initiated transformation of our country into a European style social welfare state.
Can Republicans reverse this political trend?
I say yes. The reason is that it is in the interests of our Hispanic citizens to support what Republicans are trying to do.
Weve got in front of us right now two contrasting snapshots of what Americas future could look like. These two snapshots happen to be our two states with the nations largest Hispanic populations. California and Texas.
California today is Americas Greece. Over-governed, over-taxed, over-regulated, over-unionized, with excessive spending and impossible entitlements commitments. If you want to know the path that our federal government is now on, just look at California.
In a recent survey by Chief Executive magazine, CEOs rated California as the worst state in the country for doing business. It is the only state they awarded a grade of F in the category of Taxation and Regulation.
Over the last year and half, California lost over a million jobs and its overall level of employment is down where it was ten years ago. Its unemployment rate is several points above the national average.
Texas, on the other hand, was rated number one by CEOs. A low tax, low regulation, right-to-work state, unemployment in Texas is several points below the national average. And Texas has had net positive job creation through the recent recession.
Hispanics who think California is model for Americas future can keep voting for Democrats. But my guess is most will prefer the Texas model.
If Republicans make this choice clear to these folks, political change has got to happen.
Who the frick CARES if they are going to vote Republican or not???? Do they want to uphold our constitution? Do they want to promote freedom and enterprise and those ideals that the Founding Fathers fought for? THAT IS ALL THAT SHOULD MATTER. And if they don’t support freedom and the US Constitution, they should be repudiated as voters and people who are occupying this country. Im tired of people worrying about whether or not they “like” someone. Are you for America or against it? If youre for it, SHOW IT. If not, get the hell out of my country!
Liz, I believe you and I are basically on the same page when it comes to illegal immigration. It’s wrong. We need to end it. We need to repatriate people to their nation of origin, through self-repatriation or by forced repatriation.
Where we seem to be having an impasse, is the idea that criminal Hispanics far outnumber the fine decent Hispanics.
That isn’t true.
We do have a massive number of illegal alien Hispanics here now, and they are exploiting the goods and services the federal government has chosen to give away to them. And while the crossing was illegal, the taking of the services is not. It’s our fault for giving it to them.
Even out of the illegal Hispanics who are here, all but a few ARE NOT killing people, committing rape, child molestations, grand theft, robberies, home invasions, or participating in gangs.
We cannot make wild comments about a group of people that for the most part only apply to a segment that are idiots.
Does every crime committed by an illegal alien on U.S. soil rest on the hands of those who have enabled illegal immigration? Absolutely. Is every crime committed by them, a crime that shouldn’t have been committed? Absolutely.
One murder by illegal immigrants is a tragedy. Hundreds if not thousands have been committed. It’s time for them to go, but let’s not denigrate folks who are here illegally, but are not committing other crimes.
The criminals, yes. Our government for it’s complicity, yes. Even every illegal alien for their illegal entry, yes. Across the board charges of criminality? That charge is not sustainable.
And yes, we know who they are.
I think to minimize this threat from illegals b/c of a few legal Hispanics is a serious mistake.
The legal Hispanics need to understand they are at risk b/c illegals are driven by a pathological Third World nationalism and the savage need to conquer gringos.
Illegals will demand legal Hispanics unite with them.......or else.
I was thinking apathy, as in how the Mexican hispanics are too apathetic and demoralized to do anything about their own country. If apathy rises in these groups, the Dem’s lose their power.
ONLY THE ONES HERE LEGALLY.
The problem isn’t with Americans of Spanish or even Black ancestry.
The problem is with the GOP leadership and many GOP politicians.
BASCIALLY they don’t believe in the product they are selling.
Which makes them poor salesmen.
We have the superior product, just a bunch of idiots doing a bad job marketing it.
“I was thinking apathy, as in how the Mexican hispanics are too apathetic and demoralized to do anything about their own country. If apathy rises in these groups, the Dems lose their power.”
How so? They still vote for more free stuff. They’re too apathetic to DO anything, but they’ll still demand the free stuff
” These articles are condescending and lack any vestige of rational thought based on what conservatism stands for.
GW promised hispanics a “new America” where “spanish could on heard every corner” and he STILL only got about 50% of the vaunted hispanic vote. It’s time for the GOP to stop thinking they can pander their way into leadership and simply find a way to lead.”
An “A” grade on the rant.
Way back when the government began it’s “Entitlement” programs we couldn’t afford it so they borrowed trillions against us and our future to keep it going. Now it has broken the bank and everyone’s future both the “entitled” and ours.
What is going to happen when the welfare payments stop? What happens when the “entitled” cannot feed or house their children?
When they can’t give anymore free stuff away because “whitey” is impoverished and is demanding ‘free stuff’ too!!!
