Red Dawn Is Being Remade, But China Ousts Russia As America's New Enemy
London Guardian ^ | June 13, 2010 | Paul Harris

Posted on 06/13/2010 4:59:20 PM PDT by raptor22

The film was a classic piece of 1980s teen cinema framed against the paranoid geopolitics of the cold war. Red Dawn starred Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen as all-American teens leading an armed resistance movement against Soviet troops who had invaded the US.

Feeding on Hollywood's recent appetite for recycling old films, Red Dawn is being remade with a handsome new cast. But there is one vital difference: this time the invading communist army that takes over America is Chinese.

The new-look enemy reflects the changes that have swept the world since the fall of the Berlin Wall. First, the Soviet Union no longer exists, thus hampering any plot driven by its invasion of America. Second, a rich vein of paranoia about the rise of Chinese economic might now runs through American politics.

That would explain the viral spread of leaked stills from the movie showing mocked-up Chinese propaganda posters draped over a "Chinese/American Friendship Centre". The posters play on American fears about their nation's declining economic influence.

I remember RED DAWN. My daughter and I walked uptown to watch it. It was such an emotionally moving story that we walked the mile and a half back home without saying a word. There was just nothing to say.

The remake is being filmed in Detroit. My son-in-law reported seeing some of the activity, including the Chinese signs etc.

Paranoid? Communists killed 70 million people and all of the docs post-'91 showed that the Soviets had not a single defensive battle plan.

Just a couple days ago, over at National Review on-line, they had a piece about what a good flick it was, based on a sneak preview.

I can’t imagine what they saw. If it was TV, it could be an upfront, but since it’s a movie, they must have made a trailer of the first shots or the tests. But, at any rate, the Communists won....From last Friday

I have been dreading this one for a while. The original wasn’t exactly Lawrence of Arabia, but it was entertaining and fun like a true cult classic. I don’t think any of that will transfer to the remake (if it ever is finished). It’ll be just another dumb action flick.

BTW, as long as we’re talking remakes (and cult classics), some bozo gave Tony Scott the go ahead to remake the 1979 flick The Warriors. From what I’ve read, it’s pretty much taking a whizz all over the original. They’ve dumped NYC for Los Angeles, and basically none of the original characters will be kept in the remake.

Oh yeah, and Scott is using actual LA gang members for some of the extras. Nice going there, Tony. /sarc.

So, why would our biggest trading partner, the biggest holder of our Federal debt, and probably the country we are most interdependent with, be cast as our enemy?

The people running Hollywood are fools and morons.

Why of course we’re at war with Eastasia. We’ve always been at war with Eastasia.

Should be remade with the Liberal/Marxist/Dims parachuting down out of their fairyland and taking over the country and our freedom...oh wait, nevermind.

Family Guy already made the musical

I’m a Wolverine,
And my hatred keeps me warm
A Wolverine,
So you Russians best be warned.

[music accelerates]
Shootin’ commies, drinkin’ deer blood, peein’ in the radiator,
Look up there, here comes a really angry Russian helicopter—
AAAAHHHHH!

It has been...a red dawn.

Really, one of the best games ever.

Agreed. Wasteland was excellent and the Fallout series has been, in general, worthy follow-on material (and light-years better than Fountain of Dreams! :-). My love of the retro-futuristic design elements hasn't faded at all, and despite the explicit anti-Republican message in Fallout 3*, it's a blast.

Depressing? “War never changes”...

Agreed. (and did you click the pic?)

The storyline's a bit different from Red Dawn, Operation: Anchorage notwithstanding.

*e.g., check out the dialogue in Andale.
