SINGAPORE, 5 JUNE: US defence secretary Mr Robert Gates today rebuked China for suspending military ties over US arms sales to Taiwan, saying Beijing's rationale made little sense.
"Chinese officials have broken off interactions between our militaries, citing US arms sales to Taiwan as the rationale," he said.
"This makes little sense," Mr Gates said, adding that interruptions in the military exchange with China would not change the US policy toward Taiwan.

They are clearly sending us a signal. I wonder if this has to do with their huge build-up across from Taiwan or their recent invasion of an island claimed by Japan. (There’s oil under it.)
I think they’re waiting for some other hotspot to grap the press’ attention.
” Mr Robert Gates today rebuked China for suspending military ties “
With about as much effect as a kitten mewling in its box...
Maybe even a little less....
China recognizes a paper tiger when they see one.
Mommy! China won’t be my fwiend any more! Waaaaaaaaaa!!!
There has to be some reason that Gates wants to still stand up for Taiwan, if only symbolically.
That said, I’m not sure what “joint military operations” with China would gain for America beyond P.R. When would China and America ever have a common enemy?
Because we have a whiskey delta CINC and they’re pretty confident he’ll back down.
Agreed. Acutually, just paper is more accurate with this bunch in charge.
China and the US may not have a common enemy, but we have a common need: oil from the Gulf region. And in order to peacefully obtain all that we need (at a price we can afford), we may be called on by the powers-that-be in that region to denounce our only real ally there.
Things like that happen when you are no longer respected as a world power.
We may have the best jet fighters, tanks, etc., but none of that does much for you if you don’t have the money to mount a major military action, and we are very soon going to be in that position.
I heard U.S. scaled down naval exercises with S. Korea in Yellow Sea. Now would USN proceed with the exercise of original scale?
Action speaks louder and they had better do it soon.
” if you dont have the money to mount a major military action, “
More importantly, and more on-point, if your leadership lacks the political will and/or courage to engage...
Ya can always find the money to fight for your life, if you have a strong enough ‘will to live’.....
Makes me wonder how this administration would have handled the captured pilots in China at the beginning of W’s 1st term.
Paper Pussy, more likely.
I assume that Mr. Gates isn't really that stupid.
He and the Kenyan Clown are working hard to destroy our military and our social fabric. Of course our adversaries are going to note this, and will accord far less respect to our country.
If this is too difficult for Mr. Gates to understand, I suggest that he open a few history books and look under such entries as "The Empire on which the Sun Never Sets."
A mere 100 years ago, Great Britain was the greatest empire that the world has seen — and today, it would have a difficult time in a rematch with mere Argentina.
The Kenyan Clown's goal is to see us also in such a sorry state, or worse if he can manage it. Mr. Gates is acting as the Kenyan Clown's agent in this destruction.
Ping. Made me think of your site.
The Russians are also threatening to cut us off over the sole PAC-3 battery in Poland and Georgia issues.
Goodbye Free China.
Muslim extremists. The Uigurs in SW China are a serious problem, with attacks on police, Government buildings, Buddhist temples, and the like.
Of course, we deal with them differently. Here we are careful to not call them terrorists, to not insult their religion by actually talking about the documented actions of its founder, allow them every freedom and protection we possibly can (even if they don't want it), and then hand out the lightest of all sentences possible.
China simply kills them and expels - or kills - their families.
In many ways I can understand China severing military ties; why would you want to partner with a paper tiger who'll hand-wring over a single slap to the face and prosecute its own for trying to protect themselves? Never, ever choose a coward as a fighting partner...
