Israel's intelligence community has found that the Turkish organizer of the seven-ship flotilla that unsuccessfully sought to reach the Gaza Strip was linked to Al Qaida. The Israeli Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center deemed the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation, known by its Turkish acronym IHH, a leading supporter of Al Qaida in its insurgency campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq. The state-supported center, meant to be the open-source arm of the Israeli intelligence community, said numerous foundation members have been arrested by Turkish security services for trying to ship weapons to Afghanistan.
"The IHH initiated a number of 'humanitarian aid' convoys to anti-U.S. Islamic terrorists in Iraq's Faluja Triangle," the center said.
The Israeli center, citing reports from Denmark and Turkey, said IHH supported Islamic fighters in Afghanistan, Algeria, Bosnia, Chechnya, Iraq, Libya and Syria. Quoting the Danish Institute for international Studies, the Israeli center said IHH was connected to "Al Qaida and global Islamic terrorism."
"The Istanbul office of IHH was raided and IHH activists were arrested, by the Turkish security services," the center said. "Explosives, improvised explosive device manuals, weapons and Afghanistan-oriented documents were confiscated during the raid."
IHH was founded in 1992 and financed by Saudi Arabia, officials said. In 2008, Israel banned IHH along with 35 Islamic charities linked to the Saudi-based Union of Good, deemed a terrorist organization by the United States.
The Israeli center, quoting a French intelligence report, described IHH president Bulent Yildirim as a recruiter and financier for Al Qaida. The report said IHH disguised insurgents as relief workers for operations in both Asia and the United States.
"Bulent Yildirim embraced the world view of the Muslim Brotherhood — the mentor of Hamas in Gaza — and has been a systematic supporter of and collaborator with Hamas," the center said.
