Reich: Crumbling Labor Market Pulling US Back Into Recession
Friday, 04 Jun 2010 04:10 PM
By: Frank McGuire
Economist Robert Reich said the United States is sliding into a double-dip recession because the labor market continues to deteriorate.
The private sector added a measly 41,000 net new jobs in May. But at least 100,000 new jobs are needed every month just to keep up with population growth, he wrote on his website.
The average length of unemployment continues to increase, rising to 34.4 weeks, up from 33 weeks in April.

The only reason the economy isn't in a double-dip recession already is because of three temporary boosts: the federal stimulus (of which 75 percent has been spent), near-zero interest rates (which can't continue much longer without igniting speculative bubbles), and replacements (consumers have had to replace worn-out cars and appliances, and businesses had to replace worn-down inventories), he wrote.
Oh, and, yes, all those Census workers (who will be out on their ears in a month or so).

Government has operated in the same way.
How could anybody have thought that this scheme could possibly be sustainable forever?
It is my opinion that the time to pay the piper is closer than most people are willing to believe.
He doesn’t have street cred when it comes to another stimulus package, but he does have street cred when he suggests that we are entering the back side of a double dip recession.
Funny...they never saw it coming. /s
Yup. Me too,
Reich is a liberal. His comments here are as best as you can get from any liberal regarding the current economic crisis. Almost every liberal is currently drafted to shill for Zero.
Yep, I agree. My only note of discord would relate to there not being a double dip, just one long dip, sort of reminiscent of a hundred mile valley in Kenya, that just kept getting deeper as you traveled through. They’ve been roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over the books that have been cooking for the last 500 days.
We have enough census workers right now, that we could probably get forms in less than thirty minutes, or not have to pay for them.
Don’t dare ask them to turn their jackets on inside out though, or you’ll see a 100 by 300 foot ACORN sign flip on your street just like it was in the bleachers at Bird Nest Stadium.
Don’t call on Tuesdays. They’re fired and re-hired five times on Tuesdays.
It seems clear to me that the Clinton machine is starting to make their move. The fact that Sestak and Romanoff have so "stupidly" let it be known that they had been made illegal offers, also confirmed by Ed Rendell in PA, and now Reich spouting off (plus a couple others I am forgetting) and you can see a clear pattern. The irony is that the Clintons will only weaken themselves in any major powerplay(s) and split the Dems because as we all know it is what's best for the Clinton's that takes precedence over what's best for the Democrat Party and the Country.
Well...when you put it that way...lol!
You’re right...they have been jiggering with the (un)employment numbers so bad that it makes me want to slap my pappy!
Trying to invent a good economy is no way to go thrugh life.
And yet some people make a nice living off it. ;-p Heh heh heh...
Have a great nights sleep.
I’ve been trying to tell people that things are way worse than the media is telling them. I barely get any details stated before someone scoffs at what I am saying. While that reaction is usually from someone who supports Obummer, it is surprising how many conservatives don’t have a clue either. I can’t think of more than a couple of people who would even listen to any “survival” ideas. Most people would react as if I were relating a tale of getting kidnapped by aliens. They are of course the very people who would come to steal what I have if things get really bad which is why I don’t try to warn them on that level. It’s an exercise in futility anyway.
because as we all know it is what's best for the Clinton's that takes precedence over what's best for the Democrat Party and the Country. What's best for the Democrat party and what's best for the country are always at odds.
The Recoveryless Recovery,
...and here's what it looks like at my side of the swamp:
Put some oil slick on the word “Recovery.” That would make it more ‘contemporary.’ :-)
How would a lib know? They have never looked for a public sector job? ;-)
The problem is these guys, including Mr. Reich believe that government is the answer...government is crowding out private investment and the Little Dictator is creating a atmosphere of chaos. These reduce private sector expansion...and with the increasing unemployment (real terms) and hence lower aggregate demand we are seeing our economy slip back into a deeper recession than before.
We simply do not have the same tool box to remedy this downturn, we have used up in a very wasteful manner our tool chest. Government spending is not stimulus in and of itself, it is a shift of money from one area of the economy to another.
As long as the democrats continue to take over entire industries, to disrespect the constitution, and to encourage “terrorist” bureaucratic regulatory dictates we will find many companies are unwilling to risk capital for expansion. They will sit back until after the next election and hope for a better environment (Republican win).
As the government increases the public sector debt load...it crowds out money available for the private sector which is much more efficient at economic expansion.
These are scary times, so hunker down, think of ways to create value (not just money) and look for opportunity. I live in a rural area and a young man I have known since he was a baby, who is not in his twenties is supplementing and strengthening his income making capability by doing maintenance and restoration work on farm implements. He charges much less than dealers and does a good job. He is a farmer by trade, along with his dad and brother, but he has been realistic in how bad things are (we are in Illinois!) and is doing something to protect himself and his family. Smart young man...he will most assuredly survive and maybe even thrive during this downturn.
That is the sort of thing we all need to do, not count on the government, employers, etc. Count on our own selves and use our knowledge to create value for ourselves...I traded the above young man a years farm rent (I rent my land to him for farming) for restoration of a tractor I have. I am benefiting by creating a higher value (more than the rent would have been)for the asset (tractor), he is benefiting by not having to pay the cash out for the land rental. It is a win win situation. Although I suppose the government loses out on a few bucks of tax money at the end of the year...
Some libs are starting to tell the truth....
Libs telling truth is also a sign the world is ending...
“I cant think of more than a couple of people who would even listen to any survival ideas. Most people would react as if I were relating a tale of getting kidnapped by aliens. “
From my experience, most people do not like to face a harsh reality. They prefer to create a “false security” in which to sooth their anxieties.
You know the nature of the beast...
Don’t get scared, get ready. Other nations have come through times like this and in this case...this is still America and we will come through this financial and political struggle just fine.
Do what you feel you need to do to protect your family from complete financial ruin, from looters and bandits, and from our own government.
Some here claim to buy gold, well be careful about that. Gold is at a premium price. It is my humble opinion that the time for buying gold has long since passed. Set about the more practical matters. Food, water, physical security, medicines. If you had to bug out with Fido do you have a collapsible kennel and food for him too?
I think there will be some violent de-evolution around the big cities. Other areas folks may pull together much more quickly than one suspects. Consider all the scenarios for your area.
There will be two attitudes on that day. Those who believe in the “real United States” and those who believe the United States has collapsed.
Oh and one last thing....don’t let your prayin’ knees get lazy.
