From NOAA:

Better than the 7-year cicada plaques that hit every so often.

Do they bite like horseflies? I hate those nasty flies that fly around your head while they take turns biting you. They swoop down on you and chase you for quite a way.

There was a lady-bug infestation in England last year. The ground was covered in them....like walking on cherios..crunch crunch.

Worse than the 17 year locusts (cicadas) in the NE in 2004.

Do you mean love bugs?

I believe noseums are smaller - more like sand gnats.

On the Eastside of Detroit they got so bad that they brought out the snow plows to move them off the road.

I remember sliding into a car with my bicycle because the road was so slick with them.

They only last a couple days.

Break those fly rods out! We used to wait for a May Fly hatch when I was young, don’t fish much any more but back in the day I did.

Try driving through Houston to New Orleans when the “Love Bugs” are out. Ok, OK, I know we call em something else, but this is a family program.

May you catch some fat trouts to eat. Tell your wife to clean them while you get the grill going:):) And you’ll get the cole slaw and butter and sour cream for the baked potatoes. And Lowry’s Seasoned Salt. That is mandatory. For making your wife clean the fish, you must go out and buy the beer, soft drinks and coal. And anything else she tells you to buy.

Bluegill and catfish are fine bbq’d. Catch a great big catfish and then tell your wife to clean it! Double the supplies you went out to buy. And dig a hole to put the remains in like the Indians did for fertilizer. They weren’t dummies.

Do they bite like horseflies?

No, they just land on the shady side of things and sit there. You can pick them up by grabbing their wings. You can set them down and they don't try to fly away. They are the most passive critters going. They'd make great pets if they lived more than a couple days.

See the pic at the top of the page. The main body is an inch or so long and the tail part is another inch.

I remember riding my bike on them as a kid. Crunchy and slippery.
