A growing conversation among Christian fundamentalists asks the question that may have been inevitable: is the oil spill in the gulf a sign of the coming apocalypse?
About 60 million white evangelicals live in America, and about one third of them believe that the world will end in their lifetime, according to the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. Broadly speaking, these Christians subscribe to a theology called "premillennial dispensationalism." In this world view, they are warriors on the side of God: a cosmic battleculminating in apocalypse, judgment, and, finally, the reign of Jesus in a new heaven and a new earthwill come soon. The most determined of these believers mine the Book of Revelation for signs that the end is near.

A text of terrifying and mysterious prophesy, Revelation forecasts the apocalypse in coded language; Christians have spent lifetimes trying to break that code by correlating its verses to current events. (A New York minister named William Miller used Revelation and other sources to predict that the world would end on Oct. 22, 1844. He had previously predictedwrongly, obviouslythat the date would be March 21, 1843. The Millerites, once a powerful and fast-growing sect, quickly became extinct..
Some interpreters are very sure: The oil spill matches biblical prophesy and is another predictor of the end. One commenter at Godlike Productions argues that the redness of the oil seen in pictures can be interpreted as blood. The water is tinted red from the oil it ACTUALLY looks like blood. coincidence??? NOT!!!! On Facebook, at least two discussion groups are devoted to mining the parallels between events in the gulf and those predicted in the bible; and in a heart-rending interview with CBS, a Louisiana minister named Theodore Turner, whose congregation is one third fishermen, said he knew it to be so.
No wonder Newsweek is for sale.
Only Newsweak could possbily come up with such a lame attempt as this to smear Christians.
Seriously? Is this the best they can do?
Pathetic.
No, but a president embracing the antichrist might be.
and I guess we are only white!
Hispanics and Blacks and Asians I guess are on another list....
Geez!
Godlike productions is a disinformation site run by the government. The government keeps track of the “lunatic fringe” there.
The Government? what for?
the author makes a statement which is just wrong, and then proceeds to use that paradigm as truth for her argument. The statement is:
“But theres a problem. In the place where American religion and politics intersect, signs of the end times have traditionally been interpreted by members of the right as punishment for ungodly behavior by those on the left.”
I don’t know any evangelical Christian who interprets the end times based on political party. .. only at the belief system held by individuals. She seems to have fallen for the MSM line....that Evangelicals are simply stupid. It isn’t so. Actually, I would argue just the reverse.
And why would she say “white evangelicals”? Evangelicals come in all colors....
Her article baits more than it informs.
Are Republicans in power again? Holy smoke I missed it. All I remember is dims taking both houses in '06, the WH in '08, and dang, they're gone! What happened?

OR
"A growing conversation among Al Gore followers and other environmental zealots asks the question that may have been inevitable: is the oil spill in the gulf a sign of the coming environmental apocalypse?"
What about the algal blooms (algae) which are called red tides? They make parts of oceans red on a random basis. Google it.
“About 60 million white evangelicals “
White?! Is there a reason he had to point that out? I know a lot of evangelicals of all colors.
This has to be one of the most bloody stupid things I’ve read this week.

Why would Newsweak quote some loon and make it sound as if it were coming from a mainstream evangelical site? I just visited Godlike Productions and in about 5 seconds I could tell it’s anything but evangelical. That place is a nuthouse, I mean way way out on the ragged edge.
Newsweak is a pathetic joke that should be allowed a swift death.
Ditto for Kahoutek, Y2K, the Mets winning the World Series...
Don’t forget all the pine and aspen trees dying across the west.
Tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes....death, disease and pestilence ...
then add in 2012
and a lame president reshaping the world to the benefit of islam....
