'God Of Dead' Statue Joins 'Bluecifer' At DIA...

DENVER -- As if travelers weren't already freaked out by a 32-foot tall blue stallion with fiery eyes, now a towering statue of the Egyptian god of the dead is welcoming fliers at Denver International Airport.

Workers erected a 26-foot tall, seven-ton replica of Anubis, the jackal-headed god of the dead, on Wednesday. The blue and gold statue gazes into the main terminal to promote the King Tut exhibit that opens June 26 at the Denver Art Museum.

Anubis stands not far from the rearing blue "Mustang," an often derided artwork branded "Bluecifer," "Satan's Steed" and "Blue Devil Horse" by critics.

Now the Internet is abuzz with talk about Anubis, who, as the ancient "Lord of the Underworld" and the "god of mummification," ushered the dead on their final journey.

"Why would they place a statue of a god associated with death outside of an airport? Especially one I'm going to in two months?" a puzzled traveler wondered on tvtropes.org.

Thrilled museum officials say Anubis' DIA showcase is a great way to promote the rare showing of King Tut's treasures to millions of travelers.

Why is the airport forced to go with the Egyptian Gods of Death?

Because the Gods of Modern AirTransportation are copyrighted by Harrison Ford and John Travolta.

If they were installing it permanently it might be some cause for alarm.

But if it’s to promote the “King Tut” exhibit and is based in Egyptian history, no problem.

(But as a marketing device, I think the King would be more recognizable—these choices are pretty arcane.)

That’s pretty neat. If I was going to be in Denver I’d go see that exhibit. I saw a similar sounding Egyptian exhibit at the Boston MFA about 20 years ago and it was fantastic.

Why don’t they just dress up the control tower as Moloch and be done with it?

“Ancient Egyptian God is bad Voodoo.” Wonder if someone else said something about it being “bad karma.” the mixing of various religious concepts is always sort of funny to me.

Of course, I don’t believe in Egyptian gods, voodoo or karma. I believe in skillful pilots and efficient engineering to get me from airport A to airport B.

There are many who think the gold King’s head icon is a curse. The Jackal may be more appropriate.

The blue horse, rearing up is controversial enough. OK, the blue color is an artist’s prerogative. But the eyes are red, and lit electrically. Creepy.

Let’s see if these ‘gods of death’ will remain at the airport even after the exhibit is over. After all, we have become a country where all religious symbols are welcome except for the symbol of the One True God — the cross.

If they put a seven ton crucifix up to promote an exhibit of “Christian Themed Art of the West: 500AD to 2000AD” the ACLU would go crazy and sue them to stop it.

Statues of the God most Americans worship are unconstitutional. Having foreign and pagan gods thrust at us is culturally enriching.

There was a very ancient belief in Rome that as long as the flame burned in the temple of Jupiter Rome would survive. After the conversion of Constantie it was put out. Not too long after Rome fell, the barbarians breached the gates and the city was sacked. Rome did not long survive once the traditional religious and moral order was overturned.

(Many would say this was a good thing, that Christian virtues made many aspects of Roman civilization, such as slavery, untennable. And of courese many would say the worship of false gods was replaced with the worship of the true god. Be all of that as it may: it still prefigured the end of the Roman empire in the West.)

Neither should we expect our nation to survive the overturning of our Christian religion in favor of the secular agnosticism promoted by the Elites. Even more so if you beleive that we are moving from worship and morality based on the Truth of the God of Abraham to a false religion based on mere egoism and pleasure.

Ozymandias
by Percy Bysshe Shelley
I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

“The American sculptor, Luis Jimenez, worked for 15 years to create the horse, which he simply named “Mustang” . Yet, he did not live to see it installed this year in Denver. In 2006, a large piece of Mustang slid from a hoist and pinned him against a steel beam, killing him. The sculpture was then finished by his son.”
