The sinkhole is a result of rainwater saturating the ground after tropical storm Agatha. The image is not a photoshop-job (see other angles of the sinkhole below) despite looking as if a giant hole had been punched in the Earth.

Exactly.
How long until the Mole People craw up out of there?
Too funny. Hadn't heard that before.
It looks like a cenote, common in Yucatan, but at least one was already known to exist in Guatemala.

The hole has probably been there for a long time, and the “roof” just caved in.

The Zacaton cenote is about 300 meters deep with an opening about 50 meters in diameter.

If, as I suspect, it’s a cenote, then the adjacent buildings will be fine. In fact the real estate values are likely to soar, because cenotes are a huge tourist attraction in Yucatan, and there’s apparently only one previously discovered in Guatemala and it’s out in the deep jungle where only the hardiest tourists will venture.
And some idiot will drive right around the road block to drive right into the hole..
It’s a rerun: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070226-sinkhole-photo.html
“The revenge of the huge hole in the ground” or something.
Even Mad Michelle's booty might not plug that hole.
Actually, it looks like the hole our elected officials are trying to fill with our tax dollars.
Wow! I’d be waiting for a giant spaceworm, or the Debbil to come out!

They'd have to be otherwise they'd be the same hole.....and we'd be pwned.

Fascinating ... esp. the theory connecting such structures to a meteor impact far away.
Technically, if this was the other end of the first hole....
:)
The edges are so well defined and clear cut, it does look photoshopped.
One has to wonder what’s under all that ground and how big a chasm is down there?
What’s holding the rest of the ground up? How big is the thing going to get?
