It was, apparently they had side arms but carried
nonlethal paint guns, not expecting assualt from the
“peace” activists.
Those Israeli soldier went right into an ambush, good thing those “peaceful” protestors were not all armed with knives or guns. Otherwise, it might have been a massacre of those Israelis.

They should have sunk the boat. Those weren’t “peace activists”. They threw a soldier off the boat.
Rubber balls, tear gas balls, a few other types can be fired from paintball guns. Non lethal but sometimes effective for crowd control.
The initial IDF team did have paintballs. When the “peace activists”
were exposed as being armed with handguns, IDF
shifted to live ammo.
