New Orleans faces a 'slime wave'

The Gulf oil spill could end up blasting New Orleans with crashing waves of black muck.

Hurricane season starts tomorrow, and officials yesterday warned that high winds and rough surf could turn crude oil leaking from a BP oil well in the Gulf of Mexico into a black tidal surge capable of sliming miles of coastline with a stinking, sticky mess.

"You put a major hurricane in there, you're liable to have oil in downtown New Orleans," Ron Kendall, an environmental professor at Texas Tech University, told National Geographic.

Mitch Landrieu, the Big Easy's mayor, said he's already worried about a major 'cane.

"The oil that's in that water is either going to be on the marshland or the land that it touches," he said.

"The challenges are great."

The spill, the biggest in US history, is already inflicting damage that could last a lifetime.

"And BP can pay to clean that up also."

If they don't run out of money. They have made a lot of money, but this is going to cost them a lot for a long time. They may go under because of it.
60MIN did a piece last Sunday (yes, I know they have a liberal slant) They interviewed some of the people who were on the rig when it blew up. (They were engineers etc., not just min wage employees, and they all said the same thing. That BP went hell bent for leather to get the oil pumping ignoring many safety precautions because the project was behind and costing them an extra $1M a day. Just a drop in the bucket as to what this will cost them.

Just a thought how to stop the flow of oil coming out of the ground.

Employ a device resembling a canon, in form of a long very heavy metal tube closed on one end with the purpose of launching a projectile. It does not have to have any rifling with the caliber or diameter of the projectile about the same as the bore hole or slightly larger. The projectile could be slightly tapered in front, and be a NONE explosive metal cylinder with a heavy powder charge behind it. Then make an attempt to position it over the original bore hole which may or may not have to be trimmed some what cleaned up to facilitate and allow the entry of this solid metal cylinder or projectile in to the original bore hole.

Then put a heavy powder charge behind this NONE explosive projectile and shoot it in to the bore hole to close it off. Since the projectile would be recessed in this metal barrel or firing tube, arrangements could be made using compressed air to blow out any water first before firing the projectile in to the bore hole, similar to using a torpedo, except in this case it would be none explosive and only used to plug the hole.

The whole contraption in form of a long heavy metal tube could be suspended from cables above and guided over the bore hole and used repeatedly if the initial try would be unsuccessful. Also these metal plugs or projectiles could be cast from solid lead what could be easily bored out and restore the flow of oil in a safe manner once its purpose has been accomplished. Even if the first shot would not be successful repeated attempts may cave in the remaining pipe and pound what is left in to the ground similar in effect to a pile driver.

Well this is just a thought or suggestion; shoot something in to the bore hole when everything else failed to do the trick. I am quite certain if a heavy metal dome was fabricated previously to catch the escaping flow of oil in a fairly short amount of time, the contraption as suggested by me could be rigged up just as quickl

Well, since there has been a slime wave flowing FROM New Orleans for years it’s about time the tide was reversed.

I am very curious how this ends - maybe this is even more of a mess in the end as chernobyl.

Besides - how come a company like BP makes good EBIT in a year like 2009 - isn’t that suspicious ?

New Orleans faces a slime wave? I haven’t read the article but are the criminals who fled Katrina to live in Houston finally returning to New Orleans?

We here in Mississippi are very concerned over this spill, has not hit out beaches yet but it is coming. IF BP had started drilling a new well at the leak when it happened it would all be over by now, they did not so, more leaks.

I thinkthe relief well would take three months and don’t think it would be over by now. They are drilling it but I think they are still months away.

Landrieu’s worried? So what is he going to do about it?

Play Nagin?

Is there no heavy equipment in Louisiana that could be used to scoop up the muck?

Is there a BP liaison in each State that can deal with the immediate issues?

If not, why not? Did the maoist not even think about this or did the vacation interfere with his responsibilities.

In my uninformed opinion, the high winds in a hurricane will help emulsify the crude oil and hence it will sink. You will not see slicks under hurricane conditions. I would say sustained wind speeds greater than 20 kns will emulsify the oil.

The country has already had a slime wave. It was called the November ‘08 elections and we are covered by Obama-stuff.

Right from the Chicago sewers.

The diff between a t*rd and Obama is that the turd has value and smells better.

Smarter, too.
