CHICAGO (AFP) – US President Barack Obama visited oil-stricken Louisiana, where he saw a little oil, a lot of officials but none of the local inhabitants he promised not to leave in the lurch amid the worst oil spill in US history.
Breaking off from his three-day, Memorial Day weekend in his home city of Chicago, Obama early Friday flew to the Mississippi delta, where fragile wetlands and nature preserves are being coated with crude from the April 20 Deepwater Horizon rig disaster.
On a beach of white sand between Port Fourchon and Grand Ile, some 100 kilometers (62 miles), as the crow flies, from New Orleans, Obama strolled with a group of reporters showing them the little globules of oil he was rolling in his hands.
But on his second visit to the Gulf of Mexico coast since the massive underwater oil spill began 40 days ago, Obama stayed away from the places worst-hit by the black tide, where birds are lethally coated in the oily muck.
"Those are islands," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters on Air Force One on the way back to Chicago. "A lot of those places you've got to get into a boat to go to," he added.
"We wanted to a see... a little bit different section of the state," he said, referring to Grand Isle, where beaches were closed at the onsetting blanket of oil.
"In a place like Grand Isle you've got a pretty big tourism impact."
At the island's Coast Guard headquarters, Obama met with Louisiana officials, including Governor Bobby Jindal and fellow governors from also oil-stricken states Alabama and Florida.
Scheduled to last 20 minutes, the meeting lasted two hours.

President Obama, who is spending the Memorial Day weekend in Chicago, issued a statement Saturday evening on the decision to abandon the top kill.
“While we initially received optimistic reports about the procedure, it is now clear that it has not worked,” Mr. Obama said.

It's no surprise he didn't meet the locals. I don't think he's much concerned with the "little people" unless he wants their money or their vote.
It’s obvious he would rather catch hell from his political enemies for taking the vacation than from the nag Michelle, the whining spoiled kids, and the freeloader Mother-in-Law for not taking the vacation. The women in his life expect a life of luxury on the taxpayer dime and I’m sure they don’t let him forget it.
It is not a vacation. He is going to the Blogojevich trial. He was subpoena as a witness. The media is just allowing him to lie about the real purpose of that trip to Chicago, because they do not do their job.
