The University of California (UC) is proposing tinkering with admissions requirements because a large proportion of their students are Asian.
The various school campuses around the Golden State show representation of Asians ranging between 40 and 54 percent of the total number of students while only representing 13 to 14 percent of California's population. So the question is whether standards for admissions ought to be lowered in favor of non-Asians to create more of a balance in the schools' student makeup.
Ward Connerly, founder of the American Civil Rights Institute (ACRI), explains that some administrators say there are just too many Asians and believe that "the only way to curtail that is to raise the standards on Asians and to apply a different standard to them than we apply to – quote – 'underrepresented minorities' who are black, Native American and Hispanic."
Reports that that one of the reasons the number of Asian students exceeds that of other races is because they typically work harder and ultimately attain higher levels of achievement. Connerly contends that their work ethic should not create an issue.
"I subscribe to the view that Ronald Reagan had when he was governor of California, when this same circumstance presented itself at the University of California, namely – quote – 'too many Asians.' Ronald Reagan said, 'I don't care if every seat is held by an Asian if they've earned the right to be there.'"
The ACRI founder goes on to explain that he sees no problem with the Asian student population, but when he asked a UC administrator what was wrong with the school being dominated by Asians, he was told that they are "too dull – they study, study, study."

Part of this is that they have cultures that value learning and part of this is the types of Asians who’ve come here. The Asains who’ve come to the US in the last 40 years tend to be educated and very driven. They are the cream of the crop in their society. The Hispanics who’ve come here, in addition to being lawbreakers, tend to be the most ignorant people in their society and the most apathetic towards school.
There are no “Asian” students”. Humans are way too diverse to be lumped together. Even members of the same family are different. How much more different are Japanese from Koreans, Indians from Taiwanese? How about California-raised Nisei?
Everybody gets into college on his/her own merit as an individual.
But if your background culture insisted you NOT learn proper English but substitute Ebonics instead; or that studying is “acting white”; then you are not going to do as well.
I do not believe in the racism of low expectations which says that blacks are unable to do as well as whites or Asians and thus must be pandered to with lowered standards.
Asians assimilate because they are smart/wise enough to understand that if their countries of origin were so friggin’ wonderful they never would have left.
My daughter goes to a high school in San Francisco where she is one of three whites in her grade. The rest are mostly Asian (98%). I like knowing that she is surrounded by friends that “study, study, study”. Pushes her to do better than she might have.
Someday it will be unacceptable to even ask what “nationality” or “race” an applicant is. The New York Philharmonic has the right idea: everyone auditions sight unseen, behind a curtain.
In a dream world, students would submit applications with no mention of gender or race and let the chips fall where they may.

Good News...they understand CAPITALISM...they’ll start a business and self finance it...then work hard to make it grow.

My daughter, when at U of M, saw a poster on a kiosk on campus: "What would an Asian do?" I think it was a great motivator!
Then, when the Asians are “represented” at three times their demographic percentage, and blacks at 10% of their demographic percentage,

Yep, I’m disgusted with libs as well. We need to not cater to their whining anymore, and strongly rebuke them for it.

It’s more like the State’s tyranny enforcement arm.
Here's part of the deal ~ you have a package ~ call it a University ~ and it consists of faculty, buildings, grounds, facilities, parking space, housing AND students.
If you have an inferior student body (use present day Columbia university as an example), the rest of it doesn't matter ~ except for your research programs where you can bring in graduate assistants from other schools, or hire on adjunct professors doing post-doc study.
If you have inferior facilities you might have to adjust your programs, and insufficient parking could be absolutely deadly in a suburban location. Still, you can run a top ranked school with a top level student body and middling buildings, and maybe even a good but not great faculty (provided you have a lot of them).
If California really wants to lose its Asian students they can do that, but the result will be a string of third-rate loser colleges with doper faculty members.
End of story.
I really miss Reagan's common sense.
My daughter’s best friend has a mother of Asian descent. She has been wonderful for my daughter - they are like two sides of the same coin (study, study, study). Academics comes first. I remember many of my closest friends in High School and college were of Asian descent - we had a closer world view that many other of my peers.
Just define everyone to be black. Problem solved!

Let me get this right? Deny opportunity based on race/ethnicity because so many “Asian” are working hard and going through school? Not the same America I grew up in. What happened to “work hard, study hard and become a productive member of society? Is this something of a bygone era? I guess some people want Asians to “know their place” and work only in dry cleaners, Chinese restaurants, and railroads? Geez.

This story made the front page of papers around the country , including the details of the unidentified 2.8 gpa man's dubious claims of ethnicity.
That's how much things have changed in so short a time period: Can you imagine such a story being printed (or posted) today? They put in suspect's race in BOLOS back then, too.
