NC to consider Arizona-inspired immigrationg bill

North Carolina joins 17 other states considering immigration legislation similar to the law Arizona recently passed, which is designed to identify, prosecute and deport illegal immigrants.

Sen. Don East (R - Surry) has introduced a resolution in the North Carolina state senate to pass immigration legislation that would criminalize not carry immigration documents and would give police the power to detain anyone they suspect is in the country illegally -- turning them over to immigration officers.

"I think the states have the right and the legal and moral right to see after their own if the federal gov will not, and in this particular case the federal government has not." East said.

Sen. East proposed the legislation because he says illegal immigrants put a burden on state services. He also says he was appalled when Mexican President Felipe Calderon criticized the Arizona's immigration law during a recent visit to the U.S.

"I was absolutely amazed and astonished when I watched on the national news that the president of Mexico came here and chastised my congress, my president and chastised this country for the bill the state of Arizona passed." East said.

Sen. East's resolution may not be formally introduced as a bill until state lawmakers convene in January. Lawmakers are currently in short-session in Raleigh, a time typically set aside for dealing with the budget.

ALIPAC, a political action committee that supports Arizona's immigration law, lists 18 states, including North Carolina, that is considering immigration legislation modeled after Arizona's. They include:

Arkansas Idaho Indiana Maryland Michigan Minnesota Missouri Nebraska Nevada New Jersey North Carolina Ohio Oklahoma Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina Texas Utah

Great idea, but I would be shocked if North Carolina passed it. North Carolina seems to be a sanctuary state of illegal aliens.

Well, maybe a boycott would mean the Outer Banks would be less crowded...

Good, keep going. Soon the only states that will allow illegals will be Calfornia and New York. I feel so sorry for the rural areas of those states, maybe instead of doing something about illegals the rural areas can do something about splitting up the state and forming their own states.

It’ll never take root here. The legislature is Rat, so that’s one strike. The Governor is a Rat, so that’s two strikes. And the big agricultural concerns down east, the farms and especially the meat processing plants, are very powerful politically and employ lots of illegals. That’s strike three.

President of Mexico chastising us??...I'm still amazed that our own president chastises us.

Unfortunately, you are 100% correct but this should be made a campaign issue and hopefully after the elections we will be in a better position to see it happen. I can still dream can’t I?

We need to threaten our own NC senators and representatives if they don’t pass it, then they will not be re-elected in November.
We also need to threaten those who hire illegal immigrants that we won’t patronize their businesses.

I know it is a pipe dream but I can dream...

Most of our senators and reps are Democrats that are totally controlled by Liberals in DC so don't hold your breath.
